The former youth international says Akwa should be given all the respect in the NPL
Akwa United goalkeeper Femi Thomas has said that the Uyo side should not be written off in the Nigeria Premier League as they have the capabilities to win the league title.
Thomas told Goal.com that the team is capable of causing upsets this season even though nobody has given them a chance to survive.
"I laugh most times when I see people not talking about Akwa United when they discuss the Nigeria Premier League. A lot of people believe we may not survive the rigours of the elite division,” said Thomas.
"But I think it has worked in our favour as we are gradually inching our way to the top of the league table. With 29 points, we host Rangers on Sunday in Uyo and have another home game against Lobi Stars in the mid-week fixtures.
"We have everything we need in Akwa United. The management has taken our welfare very seriously and it is one of the reasons why we are doing well.
"In Akwa United, you will not see the big names, but we have fantastic players who are committed and very good. I am optimistic that we are going to finish well this season.
"The fact that nobody is reckoning with us is the tonic that is driving us to succeed and I know we are going to meet our expectations.
"Our best will come in the second stanza of the league," Thomas boasted.
