Nigeria will only have one representative in the next round of the Caf Champions League after Dolphins lost 1-0 to Coton Sport of Garoua in the second leg on Sunday evening. The contest ended 2-2 on aggregate but Dolphins were edged out having conceded the away goal during their first leg 2-1 home victory.
The Cameroonian side had said after the game in Port Harcourt that they needed only one goal to move into the next stage of the competition.
In spite of the lack of adequate preparation due to the players’ insistence that they get paid their allowances, they struggled to win 2-1 in Port-Harcourt.
They would have to wait for next season to see whether they will still play in the Caf Champions League.
There was happier news as Sunshine Stars braved all odds to beat Recreativo Libolo of Angola 3-0 to qualify to the next stage of the competition in Ijebu Ode.
Sunshine Stars lost the first leg 4-1 but got three goals in the return leg to end the contest 4-4 on aggregate. They, therefore, sailed through courtesy of the away goal they scored in Angola.
Izu Azuka scored the first goal in the 20th minute of the match. Captain Godfrey Oboabuna added the second in the 34th minute while Dele Olorundare completed the thrashing in the 76th minute.
It is Sunshine Stars’ first participation in the top tier Champions League.
