The federation has given its backing to the foremost grassroots football competition in the country as it enters the third year
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has officially endorsed the third edition of the Gulder Five – A - Side Football Competition. The body’s intent was made known via a letter signed by Aminu Maigari, the federation’s president.
In the letter of endorsement, Maigari wrote: “We have no objection to this third edition that seeks to stimulate even further the spread and interest in Five-A-Side Football in our dear country.”
“We acknowledge the huge awareness and keen interest that the Gulder Five-A-Side Football Competition has generated in Five-A-Side football in this country.”
He further commended the Gulder brand, manufactured by Nigerian Breweries Plc, for its commitment towards developmental football via the Five – A – Side initiative.
“It is noteworthy that your sponsors (Gulder) have strengthened commitment to ensure that the event will not only be memorable but pace-setting in the area of Five-A-Side football in Nigeria. The present NFF administration is interested in any project that seeks to develop the game in our country, and we thank you for this stride, while counting on your continuous link with us for technical support for this programme.”
Reacting to the competition’s endorsement, Walter Drenth, marketing director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, thanked the NFF for its support.
“The official endorsement by the Nigerian Football Federation, the body charged with overseeing football competitions and activities in Nigeria for this year’s edition is testament that Nigerians should expect nothing but the best in terms of Five-A-Side football in Nigeria. We can only but pledge to abide by the rules of the games, in terms of officiating and players’ conduct,” Drenth said.
He further charged intending teams to go to the Gulder website where they can fill the forms to enable them participate in the games.
Mr. Mitchell Obi, Vice Chairman, Master Sports Ltd, also thanked the NFF President for the Federation’s support for the competition.
“Getting the NFF support for any football competition is not a ride in the park. Indeed, the NFF subjects initiatives of this kind to close scrutiny to ensure that the concept of developmental football, which the body is passionate about, is truly met. I will also like to congratulate the management of Nigerian Breweries Plc, makers of Gulder brand, for sustaining this initiative. This is the third Season, and one can only predict that it will wax stronger,” said Obi.
Registration for the competition commenced on March 27 and will close on April 22. Intending teams can visit the Gulder website to register online.
The tournament will be played in centres around the country with zonal qualifiers making it to Lagos for the round robin finale.
