Malesani: The season starts now for Palermo
The 58-year-old is philosophical over the Rosanero's hopes of avoiding relegation, and believes he has the squad necessary to ensure the club remain in Serie A next season
New Palermo boss Alberto Malesani says he is optimisic about the club's chances of surviving in Italy's top flight this year.Malesani flew into Sicily on Tuesday to become the club's 25th coach since 2002, following the dismissal of Gian Piero Gasperini on Monday.
And with the Rosanero currently sitting bottom of Serie A, the former Genoa boss is under no illusions of the task facing him in guiding Palermo to safety, but insists he has the squad at his disposal to avoid relegation.
Speaking to reporters at the press conference, the 58-year-old was philosophical on the club's survival chances, he said: "It is from the most difficult situations that the greatest achievements emerge.
“I am at a great club and the offer interested me straight away. President Maurizio Zamparini and I analysed everything and I will treasure the indications he gave me.
“I’m certain this is a good squad that still has to find its identity and that will be my toughest task. I’ll speak to everyone and try to extrapolate the right motivation to secure safety, which is what Palermo deserve.
“I don’t make promises, as I prefer to provide facts on the field. We have to pretend that we start a new season now, when we play against Pescara on Sunday.
“Nothing will be decided until the final round and we must try to finish above the bottom three."
