'Fired Atletico Madrid into second place' - Goal's World Player of the Week David Villa

PLAYS FOR Atletico Madrid

Celta 0-2 Atletico Madrid

They say everything happens for a reason and the suspension of Diego Costa inadvertenly worked in Atletico Madrid's favour as David Villa offered a timely reminder of his enduring class.

The former Barcelona man scored twice to give his side a 2-0 win over Celta Vigo and capitalise on the Blaugrana's 1-0 defeat at Valladolid, to leave them in second place in La Liga.

Goal's Alec Fenn said: "They've been accused of being overly-reliant on star man Diego Costa, but Atletico Madrid and David Villa proved they can be just as potent in his absence.

"Villa opened the scoring on 62 minutes after taking advantage of some sloppy defending and slotting home, before doubling his and Atletico's lead two minutes later.

"Jose Sosa sped down the right and pulled the ball back for Villa, who showed his eye for goal remains very much intact by rifling past Yoel."

Congratulations to David Villa, Goal's 251st World Player of the Week winner!
