With 18 rounds of the Eredivisie played and the winter break now interrupting the action until January, Goal takes a look at the standout performers so far in Netherlands
Another calendar year is coming to an end and with it, the Eredivisie's finest take a well-earned rest ahead of 2014.
Reigning champions Ajax once more top the table heading into the winter break, but Vitesse, Twente and Feyenoord still have every chance of challenging for the domestic title, too.
Unsurpisingly, these four teams all have at least one player in Goal's Eredivisie Team of the Season so far.
Ajax shot stopper Jasper Cillessen gets the nod between the sticks following a string of fine performances. The Netherlands international started the 2013-14 campaign on the bench behind Kenneth Vermeer, but has been vital to the Amsterdam giants' return to top form since breaking into the starting XI with seven clean sheets in 12 games.
In defence, Vitesse's Kelvin Leerdam starts at right-back. The former Feyenoord man has impressed defensively and going forward, scoring seven goals so far. Darryl Lachman has been one of the revelations of the season and the PEC Zwolle centre-back thus earns himself a place alongside Joris Mathijsen, who has been Feyenoord's best defender since his return to the starting XI. Patrick van Aanholt is the second Vitesse player in defence after a series of stellar performances to help his side to joint top spot.
A little higher up the pitch, Ajax star Daley Blind features as our holding midfielder, partnering up with the slightly more attacking Davy Propper. Blind initially struggled to replicate his fine form from last year, but has been brilliant ever since Frank de Boer moved him into midfield. Propper, meanwhile, has been nothing short of outstanding for Vitesse, with his superb performance against PSV the highlight of his season to date.
Twente winger Quincy Promes was still plying his trade in the Eerstedivisie last season, but has made the step up with eight goals and four assists in 15 games. Another surprise inclusion is Heerenveen playmaker Hakim Ziyech, who has been involved in 14 goals already, scoring a few stunners in the process. Starting from the left, Vitesse's Lucas Piazon simply cannot be overlooked. The Chelsea loanee has arguably been the star of the Dutch top flight in the first half of the season and has already scored 11 goals, while creating eight more. This means that Ajax starlet Davy Klaassen misses out as the 20-year-old featured in just 10 out of 18 games.
Finally, Iceland international Alfred Finnbogason spearheads the attack of the Eredivisie Team of the Season so far. The Heerenveen striker netted 24 times last season, but is on course to even better in 2013-14 with 17 goals from 15 appearances.
