thumbnail Hello,

Goal.com follows the exploits of Nigerians playing their football outside of the country, in the top European leagues and beyond

ENGLAND

PREMIERSHIP

Peter Odemwingie got sent off in the first half of West Brom’s encounter against Fulham – his first with the Baggies in his three seasons. The Nigerian lashed out at Sascha Riether, after a supposed foul was not blown for by referee Roger East in the 38th minute of the encounter. West Brom went on to lose 3-0, their first loss of the new season. He has since apologised to his team mates for the misdemeanour. The Nigerian has scored a goal this season but will now be suspended for three games.

Mikel Obi played his fourth game of the new season and helped league leaders Chelsea to a fractious 0-0 draw with London neighbours Queens Park Rangers. The Nigerian midfielder though almost cost Chelsea the match when his short back pass on 76 minutes was pounced on by Bobby Zamora but wasted the chance to score. He also had a shout for a penalty when his goal-bound shot in the first half was charged down by the hands of Anton Ferdinand in QPR’s box.

Another Nigerian, Victor Moses made his debut for Chelsea, when he came on in the 58th minute for Ryan Betrand. He tested Julio Cesar in goal for QPR and turned in a decent shift. And the striker almost capped his debut with an assist when he fired a low cross into the path of Eden Hazard in the 87th minute but the Belgian blasted over, when it was easier to score.

QPR defender, Nedum Onuoha replaced Fabio in the 21st minute and caused a scare for QPR at Loftus Road when he tripped Eden Hazard in the box but Andre Mariner spared his blushes by ruling for a goal kick. Onuoha is yet to decide whether he will be available for the Super Eagles of Nigeria. It was his fourth game for Rangers, but three have been from the substitutes’ bench.

CHAMPIONSHIP

Omatsone Aluko scored his second goal for Hull City in their 4-1 defeat of Milwall at the KC Stadium. Former Super Eagles midfielder, Seyi Olofinjana also played from the start but was replaced in the 58th minute by Corry Evans. Aluko was also replaced by Liam Rosenior in the 88th minute. Hull City are in fourth place, on 10 points, a point behind league leaders, Blackburn Rovers. City are away to Leeds United on Tuesday.

Forgotten Eagles defender, Danny Shittu made his league debut for Milwall when he came on for Paul Robinson in the 78th minute. The Nigerian defender was released from QPR after last season’s no show for the Premiership team.

Dickson Etuhu helped Blackburn Rovers to a 5-3 away win at Ashton Gate Stadium against Bristol City. The Super Eagle dropped to the Championship from Fulham and has now played all five league matches for Rovers.

FRANCE

John Utaka played his fourth game for the defending champions as they slumped to their third loss of the new league season in a 3-1 away loss to newly promoted Reims. There was added misery for the Nigerian who had to be substituted in the 26th minute with a groin injury. He may now be unavailable for Montpellier in their Champions League debut match against Arsenal on Tuesday.

Before he had to leave the pitch, Utaka had forced a save from the Reims goalkeeper, Kossi Agassa but he got injured in forcing off the shot and had to be replaced thereafter.

Apam Onyekachi returned to the Rennes team after suspension but the Nigerian defender only made the substitutes’ bench where he could not help his team as they succumbed 2-1 at home to Lorient.

Sochaux got their first points of the new season as they won for the first time away to Saint-Étienne. Former Nigeria U-17 international, King Osanga also made a first appearance in the team though he was an unused substitute.

Another former youth international, Simon Zenke could only watch on from the bench as Nancy were beaten 1-0 at home against league leaders, Marseille on Sunday.

UKRAINE

Nigeria striker Ideye Brown resumed his scoring duties for his club Dynamo Kiev after the international break as they beat visitors Karpaty 3-1 in the Ukrainian Premier League on Friday. The Nigerian hotshot was on the Super Eagles bench against Liberia last weekend but needed just 33 minutes to get on the end of a corner kick from Miguel Veloso delivered from the right corner. Ideye headed firmly past Bogatinova to give Kiev the lead.

The goal was Ideye's eighth in nine league appearances this season and keeps him second in the league's scoring charts.

Taye Taiwo also had a 90 minutes stint but the duo of Yussuf Ayila and Lukman Haruna were absent.

Unknown 20-year old Abayomi Owonikoko Seun made his debut for Volyn in their 0-0 away to Illichivets. Seun was transferred from Zestafoni in the Georgian league at the end of last season.

Michael Odibe played all 90 minutes of Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk's 1-0 win over Chornomorets. The 24 year-old defender was yellow carded in the 57th minute. This was Odibe's fifth appearance in the league.

Lucky Idaho watched on helplessly as his team, Vorya, was dismantled at home 3-0 by defending champions and current league leaders, Shakhtar Donetsk on Saturday. Idahor has played eight matches this season and scored twice.

Super Eagles defender, Ayodele Adeleye and Abdulvakhid Afolabi were absent for SC Tavriya Simferopol in their 2-0 win over Michael Babatunde's Kryvbas though Babatunde was an unused substitute.

TURKEY

Kalu Uche (pictured) continued his goal scoring exploits for new club Kasimpasa in their 3-0 home win over Gaziantepspor. Uche scored a hat-trick two weeks ago and has now scored four goals in four games to lead his club to second place on the log.

Isaac Promise was shown a straight red card in the 45th minute of Antalyaspor's 4-0 drubbing at home to Galatasaray. The former U-23 captain has scored once this season for his new club.

Michael Eneramo was on for 90 minutes and was shown the yellow card in the 70th minute as Sivasspor lost 1-0 away to Trabzonspor. The former Super Eagles striker has scored twice in three matches this season and was Nigeria's highest goal scorer in the Super Lig last season with 15 goals.

Former Enugu Rangers striker, Nduka Ozokwo came on for Ibrahim Yattara at the beginning of the second half and was shown a yellow card in the 80th minute. It was Ozokwo's second game for Mersin İdmanyurdu and he scored three goals in 28 appearances last season.

RUSSIA

Emmanue Emenike scored his second league goal on Saturday against Kuban Krasnodar. Emenike's goal gave Spartak Moscow the lead in the 53rd minute but Aras Ozbiliz equalised for Krasnodar in the 63rd minute. Spartak moved up to seventh place on the log on 13 points, six behind surprise league leaders, Terek Grozny, who beat Zenit away 2-0.

Ahmed Musa played all 90 minutes as CSKA Moscow beat Alaniya 2-0 with the two goals scored by Keizuke Honda. Musa has two league goals in six appearances.

GERMANY

Joseph Akpala came off the bench for his second appearance for Werder Bremen but he could not prevent the 3-2 loss away to Hannover 96. Akpala came on for Nils Petersen in the 70th minute but his team is struggling in the Bundesliga with just three points from their three games - having lost their two away games to Borrusia Dortmand on the opening weekend and now Hannover.

Schalke 04 won 2-0 away to Greuther Fürth without the injured Chinedu Obasi on Saturday - the Nigerian forward is yet to feature this season. Obasi’s career in the Bundesliga continues to be hampered with various injuries. The Nigerian just made the loan transfer from Hoffenheim a permanent one in the summer and will be keen to get back and help his team in the league and in the Champions League.

HOLLAND

Uche Nwofor (pictured) scored a brace for VVV Venlo in their 2-2 draw against NEC at the Seacon Stadion De Koel on Saturday. The former U-20 international scored first in the 67th minute and added the second nine minutes later to lead Venlo back from having gone two goals behind.
