thumbnail Hello,

After the misery of shootout defeat in 2008, the Chelsea goalkeeper can make extra preparations to ensure his side are victorious if the showdown with Bayern goes the distance

ANALYSIS
By Stephen Darwin & Chris Myson

While both sides at the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening will hope to seal a Champions League triumph within the allotted 90 minutes, or failing that in extra-time, the possibility of a dramatic penalty shoot-out looms large for Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Spot-kicks may not be unfamiliar territory for the Blues, but memories of their 2008 slip-up against Manchester United will no doubt still haunt those players who tasted failure in Moscow four years ago.

Although the likes of Frank Lampard ooze confidence from 12-yards, not all of Roberto Di Matteo’s heavyweights have delivered knock-out blows from the penalty spot, with Didier Drogba in particular struggling in recent times.

However, the same can be said about some of Bayern's key figures, even though they ousted Real Madrid from the spot in their semi-final, with the Bundesliga giants earning a 3-1 victory on penalties to seal their place in the final.

Ahead of the clash in Munich, Goal.com looks at the preparation Petr Cech will be undergoing ahead of the match by looking at Bayern's potential five penalty takers, and exactly how they have shaped up from 12 yards in their recent attempts.

LIKELIHOOD OF CONVERTING VS CHELSEA:

If Chelsea are hoping Bayern players will crack under pressure from the spot, Mario Gomez is not a man they should be pinning their hopes on.

The cool German striker has scored each of his last five penalties, all of which have come within the last season, with one coming in the crunch shootout against Real Madrid. If there is ever a banker to score during penalties, it is Gomez for this match.

His spot-kicks tend to be low and into either of the two bottom corners.

LIKELIHOOD OF CONVERTING VS CHELSEA:

Toni Kroos is seen as a reliable taker from 12 yards, but he missed his last penalty poorly in the shootout against Real Madrid and that mental barrier will certainly be in his mind if there is a repeat in the final.

Chelsea will certainly be looking to put him under pressure should the game go the distance. Cech will be aware he tends to strike his penalties low and will be there to pounce if there is one struck without conviction.

LIKELIHOOD OF CONVERTING VS CHELSEA:

If there is a weak link in Bayern's five takers then it is captain Philipp Lahm. The defender has missed two of his last three spot-kicks and is by no means a regular taker from 12 yards, which will give the Blues hope.

He is happy to go high with his spot-kicks, which many players don't do under pressure, but that approach has not worked well of late.

LIKELIHOOD OF CONVERTING VS CHELSEA:

The Dutchman is seen as a lethal finisher from 12 yards and is capable of placing his penalties into all angles.

He missed a crucial spot-kick in a Bundesliga match against Dortmund in April, where a poor effort was saved, but he has since recovered from that with a goal against Madrid from the spot and a successful conversion against Dortmund again in the Cup final.

LIKELIHOOD OF CONVERTING VS CHELSEA:

Schweinsteiger's penalties always seem to be low and the midfielder does have a good recent conversion rate from the penalty spot.

An influential figure for Bayern, he is a man who copes well with pressure and you would generally put your money on him to score when it counts. He netted the decisive penalty in the semi-final to send his club through.
