Pardew calls for ‘unsavoury’ Van Persie elbow on Cabaye to be looked at

Latest Arsenal are ready to fight for third place, claims Wenger Previous

The Newcastle manager accepted Manchester United deserved to win Sunday's clash at the Sports Direct Arena but expressed disappointment at his side's start to the match

Alan Pardew has called for Robin van Persie's elbow on Yohan Cabaye during Manchester United's 3-0 win over Newcastle to be looked at after referee Howard Webb failed to take action.

The striker was already on a yellow card when play was stopped after the Magpies midfielder went to ground during an attack by the visitors.

And Pardew was forthright in his opinion on the incident, hinting that the Old Trafford summer signing was reacting to the “history” between the pair.

“He’s looked at Yohan and he’s elbowed him,” he told reporters. “I think that perhaps needs to be looked at, to be honest.

“There’s a bit of history from last year and I don’t know if Robin’s got caught up in that. But I think that was just a little bit of unsavouryness [sic] in the game.

“But I’m not going to take anything away from United today, they deserved to win. They came and played very, very well today for periods of that game.

“I actually thought that Yohan wouldn’t have gone down if he hadn’t done something. I hadn’t [properly] seen it myself but I’ve seen it on the replay and it looks like he’s look at him [Cabaye] and put his elbow out.

“[Should FA ban him?] That’s for them to look at, not for me.”

The former Charlton coach also expressed disappointment with how poorly his team started the match on Sunday afternoon.

He continued: “We wanted to obviously create pressure and get the home advantage with us.  They had a golden 15 minutes or 10 minutes where we just couldn’t see the ball.

“There were a few challenges which I thought we should have got a decision [in our favour] which might have just given us a chance to settle down.

“Having said that the goals weren’t wonder-goals, they were two set-plays. We’re very disappointed with the goals."

Papiss Cisse was denied a goal after David de Gea scrambled a header off the line but, after replays proved inconclusive, the 50-year-old begrudgingly accepted the decision.

“I think it’s tight,” Pardew continued. “Looking at the angles I’ve looked at it hasn’t all gone over the line.

“Those two incidents decided the fate of this game. I genuinely think if we had got a goal at 2-0 then suddenly the stadium would have come alive.

“The way we are and the spirit we’ve got in the group we could’ve got something."

Newcastle sit 10th in the Premier League after seven games but Pardew hopes players returning from injury will help lift the Magpies in matches to come.

He added: “I think after 10 games you get a view of your side and I stand by that. I do feel that we definitely need more options to come back to us.

“I think [Fabricio] Coloccini and Steven Taylor have got a good chance for the next game. I don’t know about Tim Krul but it would be nice to have that option.”
