Manchester United midfielder Fletcher to train with Scotland as Rhodes gets nod for Australia friendly

The 28-year-old took an extended break from football last season to recover from illness, but will join up with Craig Levein's men alongside the prolific youngster
Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is set to make his comeback to training with the Scotland squad ahead of next week’s friendly match against Australia.

Fletcher took an extended break from football last season to focus on his recovery from the chronic bowel condition ulcerative colitis.

But Scotland boss Craig Levein has now revealed that the 28-year-old is set to make a return ahead of next Wednesday's game at Easter Road, though he will not feature.

He told reporters: "Darren will be with us at the weekend. He's back in training and played 45 mins in a practice match last week. He's not in the squad because he's not played for Manchester United."

Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes is expected to get the nod up front after being named in the squad as veteran Kenny Miller missed out following his recent move to MLS side Vancouver White Caps.

The 22-year-old scored 39 goals in all competitions as he helped the Terriers to promotion from League One last term and made his debut for the senior side in October against Cyprus.

Elsewhere, Southampton left back Daniel Fox is in line for his first cap in almost three years with Rangers’ Lee Wallace not named in the squad.
