Arsenal star Wilshere disciplined by Uefa over betting rules

Injured Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has been given a slap on the wrist after breaking Uefa betting regulations.

The midfielder – who is still suffering with an injury after missing large parts of last season – has been given a formal warning for bringing the integrity of the game into disrepute.

The issue relates back to December 2011, when Wilshere said on his official Twitter page that Emmanuel Frimpong was "worth a cheeky £10" to open the scoring at odds of 150/1 during their Champions League tie with Olympiakos.

The England international was not involved in the match due to injury.

Wilshere later went on to say: "Frimmy nearly won me some money there!" as Frimpong hit a shot into the side-netting with the score still goalless.

According to official Uefa guidelines, a player is not able to bet on his own team. A player found guilty of breaching betting rules could face a hefty fine and even a ban.

"The player has been warned for being in breach of the principles of integrity of matches and competitions," said a spokesman.

"The disciplinary measure was a warning."

The 20-year-old is no longer on Twitter after closing his official account last month. Both tweets were deleted later that day.
