Aldridge: Rodgers will be king if he succeeds at Liverpool

The former Reds striker believes the 39-year-old could make himself a Kop legend if he brings the glory days back to Anfield following his move from Swansea

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes Brendan Rodgers can make himself a "king" on Merseyside if he brings the club success.

The Northern Irishman steered Swansea to an impressive 11th-placed finish in their first season in the Premier League and his side received numerous plaudits for their expansive style of play.

And Aldridge believes that the 39-year-old can win over the Anfield faithful, despite his lack of experience at the top of the game.

"Sometimes a fresh face and a different direction can work,” he told Sky Sports News.

"Some people will say that his lack of experience will go against him but you have to start somewhere in your football life and this could be his time.

"I think [Rodgers] and Swansea were a breath of fresh air last year and if he can bring that to Liverpool and win a lot of games percentage-wise and bring top European football to the table he'll be a king around the place."

Rodgers' two successful seasons at Swansea were preceded by a coaching role at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and brief spells at the helm of Watford and Reading respectively.

Yet, former Ireland international Aldridge is a strong admirer of the style of football Swansea have displayed this season, even comparing it to successful Liverpool teams of the past.

"He's done absolutely fantastic at Swansea," Aldridge added.

"I was brought up watching Liverpool play football [like Swansea]. When I joined Liverpool, that's what you did: pass and move.

"All you did was pass the ball and not give it away - unfortunately over the last 10 years or so, we've given the ball away far too cheaply."
