Van der Vaart urges Vertonghen to join Tottenham

The Dutchman has expressed his desire for the Belgian defender to transfer to White Hart Lane and believes a deal is close

Rafael Van Der Vaart believes Tottenham are closing in on a deal to sign defender Jan Vertonghen from Ajax.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed the club’s interest in the big Belgian, who is expected to leave Ajax this summer.

A whole host of Premiership clubs have been linked with Vertonghen and he has declared his admiration for both Spurs and Arsenal.

However Van Der Vaart, who came up through the academy at Ajax, believes that Spurs are the front runners to claim his signature.

The Dutchman told The Sun: "Spurs asked me about him. If he's sensible, he will opt to join us."

In the Sunday People he also revealed he is keeping his fingers crossed the move is completed soon.

"I hope Jan comes to Tottenham," he said. "As far as I know the deal is close to being done."
