Former Bafana goalkeeper Andre Arendse has told Goal that the South African national team has got what it takes to upset Nigeria on Wednesday.

Bafana take on the Super Eagles in the Nelson Mandela Challenge at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, and Arendse is confident of Bafana’s second victory over Nigeria.

“I think Gordon [Igesund] has got a very good team to beat Nigeria tomorrow. Everyone knows the rivalry between the two nations and I am sure the players are aware too,” Arendse told Goal.

The former Sundowns shot-stopper believes Igesund has got quality and depth in his squad despite withdrawals from the likes of Anele Ngcongca and Thabo Matlaba.

“There is depth in the squad. No doubt about that. It is a mixture of the experienced and the youth, and I am sure players like Siphiwe Tshabalala can lead the team and be a good example to the youngsters against those Nigerian stars. I think we will beat them 2-1,” he said.

Arendse has also spoken well of Itumeleng Khune’s leadership skills on and off the field, though he still believes Bongani Khumalo is a natural leader. He still believes Khumalo will soon be back in the Bafana squad.

“Look, I believe Khumalo should have been retained, but Khune has done a fantastic job as Bafana captain on and off the field.

“I played with Khumalo years ago and I saw a natural leader. I still believe he will be back in the near future,” added Arendse.
