Kenya and Parma midfielder Macdonald Mariga is likely to sit out the upcoming highly anticipated 2014 World Cup qualifier away to Nigeria, after failing to recover from injury.
The Inter Milan midfielder, who is on loan at the Stadio Tardini, was stretched off after pulling a muscle, three minutes into his full debut against Genoa in a league match three weeks ago.
A source close to the family confided to Goal.com that the player is still nursing an injury.
"[Mariga] wont be available and the Harambee Stars technical bench has been informed of that development. I believe he will be fit very soon, but should need time to regain fitness and the Super Eagles game will come too soon."
"Besides, it is only fair that he concentrates with Parma at this point in time."
Mariga's absence could open the door for Israeli-based midfielder Patrick Osiako and Gor Mahia anchorman Anthony Akumu to feature in midfield alongside Victor Wanyama and Peter 'Pinches' Opiyo.
Kenya coach Adel Amrouche has already named a provisional squad of 27 local based players to start training on Tuesday ahead of the crucial match. The Belgian will name the final squad that includes professionals days before the team departs for Nigeria for the match that will be played on March 23 in Calabar.
