Gabon have dropped from second to third in Group E of the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying grouping following the world’s football governing body’s decision to cancel the Panthers’ one point obtained against Niger during last June’s qualifiers and handing the Mena a 3-0 victory in a game that ended goalless draw.
Fifa ruled that Gabon fielded an ineligible player for the encounter following a complaint from Niger officials.
Charly Moussono of Cameroonian descent, who plays for Gabonese side Missile, holds a Gabonese passport but Fifa says the 28-year-old defender is yet to obtain authorisation to play for the Panthers.
One point will now be deducted from Gabon’s initial four to leave the Central Africans with three points, while Niger, with naught point originally, now have an addition of three to become second in the group behind Congo on goal differences.
Gabon will face Togo on Sunday October 14 in the return leg of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final qualifying round.
