Senegal national team now without a coach

The Teranga Lions are now without a coach following the expiry of Joseph Koto’s stay on Saturday with the football federation still silent on naming a successor

The Senegal national team is without a head coach since Saturday June 30, when the interim period of caretaker coach Joseph Koto ended.

The Senegal football federation (FSF) is yet to name a new coach, and is still accepting applications from local and foreign coaches, according to officials.

Koto, a former assistant coach under fired Amara Traore, was assigned the job in April following the backing out of Frenchman Pierre Lechantre, earlier announced by the body as the Teranga Lions’ new coach.

It is yet unclear if Koto will be given a second chance after fairing well in the three games he took the team to, defeating Liberia 3-1 in Dakar and a 1-1 draw against Uganda in Kampala in 2014 World Cup qualifying, as well as stunning Morocco 1-0 in a friendly played in Marrakech.

Pape Fall, former Senegal international and manager of French Ligue 2 side SM Caen, declined to vie for the job when contacted by officials.

Former Morocco and Tunisia coach Humberto Coelho, former DR Congo and Guinea coach Patrice Neveu and former Gabon and Mali coach Alain Giresse are some of the top candidates for the Senegal job, according to the body.
