Indonesia 2-2 Laos: Garudas snatch late equaliser as Laos impress in Bukit Jalil

Both sides scored two each, got a man sent off, and battled through an entertaining affair to secure one point apiece

Indonesia were held to a surprise 2-2 draw with Laos in an enthralling encounter which also saw both teams reduced to 10 men in the Group B opener of the AFF Cup.

The hosts were evidently the better side from the beginning, spreading play effectively and attacking down the right flank with Andik Vermansyah.

Laos worked hard to close them down initially, but looked increasingly opened up as the game progressed. Irfan Badchim headed over the bar in the 6th minute, before Bambang Pamungkas' effort off an Andik Vermansyah cross was blocked brilliantly by the Laotian defence, seven minutes later.

But the blow for Indonesia came in the 26th minute as goalkeeper Endra Prasetya was shown a straight red card for his harsh tackle on Vilayout.

Khampeng stepped up and made no mistake to give Laos an unlikely lead. The controversy continued as only minutes later Laos' Sopa Saysana was also given an early bath for hacking down Andik.

Nevertheless, the Merah Putih restored parity just before half-time with a perfectly placed header from debutant Raphael Maitimo, after Bambang Pamungkas's initial effort hit the crossbar. Both sides went into the break with nothing separating them in a lively encounter.

After the interval it was business as usual with Indonesia pressing hard to seize control of the game. Laos defended well and pushed forward on the counter-attack. Andik Vermansyah worked hard on the right flank and flicked in a cross on the 55th minute but to no avail.

Laos then had ball in the back of the net as Lithideth chipped over the substitute goalkeeper but unfortunately for the visitors it was ruled out for a handball. Laos finally took the lead in the 79th minute as Lithideth smashed home. after a fine run.

Indonesia though, were determined to not give up and worked their socks off to find the equaliser. It finally came in the 89th minute as Andik Vermansyah's shot was pushed away by the goalkeeper but Fendry Mofu was perfectly positioned to tap it home. Both sides pushed for a late winner but the score line remained the same as an entertaining game reached its conclusion.
