thumbnail Hello,

The 33-year-old winger scored Stuart Pearce's side opening goal of the tournament against Senegal but has warned his team not to look too far ahead

Craig Bellamy has claimed that the Welsh influence in the dressing room has played a large part in Team GB's success at the Olympic Games so far.

Drafted into the squad alongside fellow countrymen Ryan Giggs as two of Stuart Pearce's three over-age players, the 33-year-old believes that, despite being outnumbered by 13 to five in terms of nationality, the Wales internationals have helped keep the English contingent grounded.

When asked by The Daily Mirror if Great Britain could go on to claim gold, Bellamy joked: "That's you English! That is what you lot do! I'm Welsh! I'm just grateful to be involved," Bellamy joked.

"We are not going to win it. We aren't going to come first, second, third!

"We are just trying to beat South Korea. You can't look too far ahead. You just can't because anything can happen.

"Being Welsh has taught me that, with two minutes to go, anything can happen.

"I've come into this with a completely wider look. Now it is just pure and simple - let's have a go and enjoy it.”

Bellamy was keen to accentuate the positives about the team's run so far, in a bid to stop all of the negative press and cynicism surrounding the Team GB football team.

He continued: "We are brilliant at finding negatives. That is our culture. That is what we want.

"These GB games, with London holding them, there is a lot to be proud of. It has just been an incredible experience. To play a tiny fraction of a part and see people coming together has been a huge honour.

"We [the footballers] watch everything. That is what makes the Olympics so great - from the minute you wake up, there is something to watch.

"You feel great and you want to get behind every sport. We are just a tiny little bit of this. To be involved in it, to wear this kit and this badge is just brilliant."
