thumbnail Hello,

Roy Hodgson will take charge of the Three Lions at Euro 2012 and is set to name his squad this week. Willie Duncan looks at which player will be handed the captain's armband

England will begin their Euro 2012 campaign against France on June 11. It will, of course, be Roy Hodgson’s first competitive fixture as England manager and there is much speculation about which players will feature in Hodgson’s starting line-up for that crucial fixture.

In addition to that debate, there is also the issue of which player should captain England throughout the campaign and Irish bookmakers Paddy Power have opened a market on who should be handed the skipper’s armband for the match against Laurent Blanc’s men.

That market is headed up by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The Reds had a disappointing season but Gerrard guided the side to League Cup success and he would dearly love to lift more silverware as captain of his country.

The Liverpool midfielder is a 4/7 (1.57) shot with Paddy Power to lead England out against France on June 11.

Another contender to captain the Three Lions in their Euro 2012 curtain-opener is Tottenham Hotspur’s tenacious midfielder, Scott Parker.

Parker has enjoyed a fine season at White Hart Lane and he is chalked up at 3/1 (4.00) with Paddy Power to lead England against France. Parker’s chances, though, surely would have been far greater had club manager Harry Redknapp been in charge of England at Euro 2012 rather than Hodgson.

Manchester City's Joe Hart is a certain starter for the Three Lions against Les Bleus barring injury and the goalkeeper is a 11/2 (6.5) shot with Paddy Power to follow up on picking up a Premier League winner’s medal by captaining his country in their opening game of Euro 2012.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has 90 caps for England, but has worn the captain’s armband on just two occasions and is chalked up at 14/1 (15.0) with Paddy Power to lead the side out against France while injury doubt Rio Ferdinand is a 16/1 (17.0) shot with the same firm.

The market leader here appears the best bet, though, Gerrard has captained England on 15 occasions and his experience makes him an obvious choice so the 4/7 (1.57) quote from Paddy Power on Gerrard is fantastic value here.

England captain v France at Euro 2012:

Steven Gerrard - 4/7 (1.57)
Scott Parker - 3/1 (4.00)
Joe Hart - 11/2 (6.5)
Frank Lampard - 14/1 (15.0)
Rio Ferdinand - 16/1 (17.0)
