thumbnail Hello,

The referee came in for huge criticism after awarding one spot-kick and denying another in the first half at St James's Park, with some saying that he loves the spotlight too much

Mike Dean has never been the most universally popular of Premier League referees - if there even is such a thing - but he drew yet more ire on Tuesday as he awarded one penalty and denied another as Newcastle played Manchester United.

The 47-year-old punished the home team when he gave a debatable handball decision against a helpless Chancel Mbemba at St James's Park, from which Wayne Rooney opened the scoring, but sparked outrage just after the half-hour mark when he signaled to play on after Jesse Lingard appeared to have got nothing of the ball in a challenge on Daryl Janmaat in the area.

The decision bewildered and incensed Newcastle fans and neutrals who were watching along, prompting a gamut of reactions from fury to amusement on Twitter as his name rocketed up the site's worldwide trending list.
