Despite being outplayed in a tension-soaked encounter in Abuja, Edwin Okon's ladies edged the Amazons for their third title time in a row
Rivers Angels have won the 2015/2016 Nigeria Women Premier League season after defeating Nasarawa Amazons 5-3 on penalties in the final played on Saturday in Abuja.
Having already claimed the 2016 Women's Federation Cup last November, coach Christopher Danjuma's side were aiming for a second league title but they were denied via penalty shootouts at Fifa Goal Project pitch.
With this, Rivers Angels have won the league crown for the third consecutive season, and for the fifth time in history as they claimed a giant trophy, a cash prize of N350,000.
It is the first time Danjuma's ladies will be losing in the league final - after they won in 2013 via penalty shoot-out in Lokoja.
However, Nasarawa Amazons were rewarded with a cash prize of one hundred and fifty thousand naira after finishing as runners-up.
