The Nigerian team has bettered their chance of making the semi-final of the lucrative Caf Champions League on Sunday with victory over the Algerian champions

Sunshine Stars got their first win in the 2012 Caf Champions League as they beat Aso Chlef of Algeria 2-0 on Sunday at the Dipo Dina Stadium in thier third match in Group B.

Dele Olorundare and Izu Azuka scored both goals in the second half.

Sunshine had lost their home game to Esperance but got a credible draw away in Tunisia against Etoile du Sahel.

They started brightly and won a corner kick in the second minute but it was wasted. The fourth minute saw Olorundare miss target marginally. All the pressure was coming from the Nigerian side but the Algerian champions weathered the storm.

From then on, it was end to end action as both teams sought their first win in the group stage. Sunshine had a shout for a penalty kick in the 27th minute when Azuka was brought down but the referee waved play on.

Sunshine were awarded a free kick in the 41st minute in a very good position after Olorundare was fouled.  The kick taken by skipper Godfrey Oboabona was parried out of danger by the ASO Chlef goalkeeper.

Ofem Inah came on for Soga Sambo in the 45th minute but the half could have ended on a good note with a goal but Akombo headed wide from six yards out.

Sunshine Stars were in a marauding mood as the second half kicked off and they got the first goal in the 47th minute through the bustling Olorundare who scored with a header off a corner taken by Oboabona. It is his fourth goal in the competition

Stars doubled their lead in the 60th minute through Azuka’s solo move. After that the tempo of the match died down with the Akure-side hoping for a clean sheet which they did though they had some scares towards the end of the match.

Azuka should have added the gloss of a third goal in the 41st minute but his pile driver of a shot flew over the cross bar. Ocheje pulled off big saves in the 90th minute and five minutes into extra time. Patrick Kamgaing got a header on target in the 90th minute and he pushed a 30-yard free kick taken by Sabri Gharbi for a corner kick in the 95th minute. Sunshine survived to get three points and two precious goals which puts them in good stead for the rest of the group matches.

Their next match is against Aso Chlef in a fortnight in Algeria.
