Shakhtar Donetsk go into their final group game, away to Manchester United, knowing that they must better Bayer Leverkusen's result to advance to the knockout stages. A win at Old Trafford would mean that they win the group. As for Real Sociedad, their European hopes are over and with only the solitary point, they have no chance of qualifying for the Europa League. Thanks for joining me, Max Bentley, on this live commentary. Until next time, goodbye.
In the other game in Group A, Manchester United defeated Bayer Leverkusen by five goals to nil. Here is how the group stands with one game remaining: 1st - Manchester United - 11 points 2nd - Shakhtar Donetsk - 8 points 3rd - Bayer Leverkusen - 7 points 4th - Real Sociedad - 1 point
FT: SHAKHTAR DONETSK 4-0 REAL SOCIEDAD. Jagoba Arrasate's side are sent crashing out of the Champions League after a ruthless display of finishing from the Ukrainian champions. In truth, they have themselves to blame after a number of defensive errors despite matching their opponents for long periods. Mircea Lucescu's side move above Bayer Leverkusen and into second place in Group A.
Douglas Costa is sniffing around the edge of the box for his hat trick but he is denied by a strong tackle from Ansotegi. He has been simply brilliant today.
BRILLIANT GOAL FROM SHAKHTAR! It's a superb team goal from the hosts as Srna feeds Taison down the right and his accurate cross into the middle is headed beyond Bravo and into the far corner by Douglas Costa for his second goal.
Shakhtar are happy to let their opponents do the work for the remaining few minutes as they look to leisurely keep possession. The scoreline may flatter the Ukrainian champions but at this level Real Sociedad simply cannot afford defensive lapses in concentration.
Yellow CardOlexandr Kucher
Kucher becomes the third Shakhtar player to be cautioned, for time-wasting. Three goals ahead, that certainly seems unnecessary.
Jagoba Arrasate is still urging his side forward but they cannot find a way past Pyatov as Ros' shot is well held by the Ukrainian goalkeeper.
Castro attempts to better Costa's goal when he meets Seferovic's cross on the volley but he cannot keep it down and his left-footed effort goes narrowly over the crossbar.
Srna whips a dangerous free kick into the box and it somehow finds its way to Taison at the back post but his shot is well charged down by the Real Sociedad defence.
Incidentally, Manchester United are now 4-0 up away to Bayer Leverkusen. Looking back at that Douglas Costa strike, I doubt you will see too many better in the competition. It was a simply stunning strike from the Brazilian!
TWO CHANCES FOR REAL SOCIEDAD! First, Xavi Prieto goes close when he glances a header just into the side netting with Pyatov scrambling and then moments later, Seferovic cuts inside from the right before blazing a powerful left-footed shot over the bar.
A double change for Real Sociedad now as Haris Seferovic and Imanol Agirretxe replace Carlos Vela and Antoine Griezmann. Shakhtar also make their final sub with former Arsenal striker Eduardo coming on for Alex Teixeira. The Spanish side will be glad to see the back of him.
Another change for Shakhtar and there is a brilliant ovation for Luiz Adriano who leaves the field. Facundo Ferreyra comes on in his place, no doubt hungry to add his name to the scoresheet.
In the aftermath of that goal, there has been a substitution for both sides. Taison replaces Bernard for the hosts whilst for Real Sociedad, Javier Ros comes on for Pardo.
WHAT A GOAL FROM DOUGLAS COSTA! The Ukrainians launch a brilliant counter attack with Teixeira steaming away from Pardo. The Brazilian looks up and lays the ball off to Costa who sends a stunning first-time left-footed effort into the top corner from the edge of the box. Two goalkeepers wouldn't have saved that one, what a strike! Real Sociedad can wave goodbye to any chance of reaching the group stages now.
We have not seen too much of Castro down the Sociedad right but he finds space this time, only to see his cross towards Griezmann bravely cleared by Srna.
Inigo Martinez has already gifted Shakhtar one goal and his sloppy pass gives away possession on the edge of the box but fortunately for the centre-back, Pardo steps in to make a crucial interception.
Real Sociedad are not giving up hope however but they are finding it difficult to cope with Shakhtar's quick pressing game. Vela, in particular, is being given no time to settle on the ball.
The Shakhtar fans are bouncing here, they believe the three points are in the bag. In fact, there are a few fans with their tops off! They must be mad in this weather! Can Real Sociedad respond with half an hour remaining? Surely Arrasate must be contemplating some substitutions soon.
Yellow CardTaras Stepanenko
Stepanenko picks up Shakhtar's second booking of the game after a cynical block on Griezmann.
GREAT SAVE FROM PYATOV! Real Sociedad come within inches of pulling one back. Prieto's chipped ball is chested down by Vela into the path of Griezmann and the Frenchman's fierce first-time effort is palmed by the goalkeeper onto the post. Griezmann cannot believe that hasn't gone in!
Shakhtar break quickly from a corner and Srna bursts down the right before sending a cross towards the back post but Teixeria cannot divert the ball in from a narrow angle.
Shakhtar are looking for the third goal here to wrap up the win and Teixeira attempts to slip a pass through for Costa on the right side of the box but De la Bella is there to make a crucial interception.
Real Sociedad look to respond immediately and Griezmann drifts inside from the left before slicing a right-footed shot wide of the target. Jagoba Arrasate is not a happy man on the touchline.
TEIXEIRA MAKES IT 2-0! It's another defensive error for Real Sociedad and it will probably be the one that sends them out of the Champions League. Pyatov's long goal kick is misjudged by Inigo Martinez and his header falls straight to Alex Teixeira who chips the ball over Bravo and into the far corner. That's his third goal against Real Sociedad this season.
Real Sociedad get the ball rolling for the second half but they instantly cede possession and come under pressure. Martinez heads a cross out to the edge of the box and Stepanenko's ambitious strike flashes over the bar.
HT: SHAKHTAR DONETSK 1-0 REAL SOCIEDAD. Luiz Adriano's goal is the difference at the break after a fantastic first half at the Donbass Arena. The visitors had proved more than a match for the Ukrainian champions but one sloppy piece of defending leaves Jagoba Arrasate's side on the brink of elimination. Can they fight back in the second half?
Bernard concedes a sloppy free kick on the edge of his own box and Griezmann looks to strike the ball through the wall but it smashes Stepanenko in his nether region. He has taken one for the team there!
WHAT A CHANCE FOR REAL SOCIEDAD! An error at the back gifts the visitors a corner which is taken short and Cadamuro drills in a low shot towards goal which is flicked narrowly over the top by Griezmann.
GOOD SAVE FROM BRAVO! This is a brilliant spell from Mircea Lucescu's side and Douglas Costa comes close to extending their lead when his fierce left-footed effort from the edge of the box is excellently tipped around the post by Bravo. Real Sociedad need the half-time whistle here.
NEARLY A SECOND FOR SHAKHTAR! The Ukrainian champions look in the mood now and Srna drives forward from right-back before finding Bernard inside the box. The agile Brazilian cuts inside onto his left foot and tees up Fred on the edge of the box but his scuffed effort is deflected behind for a corner.
GOOOOALLL!!!! Luiz Adriano gives Shakhtar the lead! The visitors are sleeping from a corner kick which is taken short and Douglas Costa fizzes a low cross towards the front post which Adriano willingly nudges onto the inside of the post and past the helpless Bravo. Jagoba Arrasate will be furious with his side's defending there.
SRNA HITS THE BAR! The Croatian whips a brilliant effort over the wall which cannons back off the crossbar. In truth, it looks like Bravo may have had that one covered.
Yellow CardGorka Gorka Elustondo Urkiola
Elustondo picks up Real Sociedad's first booking when he protests that Bernard went down too easily under his challenge on the edge of the box. This is a great opportunity for the hosts...
Rakitskiy needs to be careful for Shakhtar here. Having already been booked, he dives in on Griezmann, leaving the French attacker in a heap. One final warning says the referee.
There has been another goal in the other Group A match as Manchester United have doubled their lead over Bayer Leverkusen. A win for Shakhtar, as things stand, would see them move into second place.
SHAKHTAR GO CLOSE! Cadamuro almost gifts the Ukrainian champions a goal when he dallies in possession on the edge of his own penalty box. Teixeira nips the ball away from the defender and plays a neat through pass for Adriano, but the striker is denied by the linesman's flag, despite placing his shot just past the post.
Incidentally, Antonio Valencia has given Manchester United a 1-0 lead away to Bayer Leverkusen. That is good news for both these sides.
Elustondo has picked up a nasty cut to the mouth as he is caught by the elbow of Luis Adriano. The referee waves play on however and Teixeira picks up the loose ball before smashing an ambitious long range shot way over the crossbar.
Real Sociedad win a free kick out on the left and with bodies up from the back, Pardo can only find the gloves of Pyatov. The visitors need to make the most of those situations.
The jeers ring out around the Donbass Arena as Real Sociedad frustrate the hosts with a sustained spell of possession. A few brave souls in black and orange shirts are wearing short-sleeves this evening despite the sub-zero temperatures, along with Claudio Bravo.
There is a fantastic tempo to this game with both sides determined to attack. Lucescu and Arrasate both seem to have made it clear that only the three points will do.
GREAT CHANCE FOR SHAKHTAR! Luiz Adriano's perfectly-weighted through pass sends Bernard clear down the left. All it needs is a left-footed shot across the goalkeeper but the Brazilian inexplicably miscues with his right boot straight into the side netting.
Yellow CardYaroslav Rakytskyy
Rakitskiy picks up the first booking of the game for a rash, mistimed challenge on Carlos Vela.
It's end-to-end stuff now and Bernard's neat reverse pass sends Douglas Costa clear down the left but his cross goes wastefully over the top for a goal kick.
Real Sociedad attack straight down the other end and they display some fantastic one-touch passing before Castro's tame shot is comfortably collected by Pyatov. The way they're playing, you wouldn't suspect that they have only one point and one goal from their first four games.
Shakhtar are beginning to grow into this game now and Teixeira, who scored twice in San Sebastian, smashes a low shot against the shins of Bravo from the right corner of the box and the ball goes out for a corner.
Douglas Costa and Teixeira combine neatly on the edge of the box but the latter is denied a route to goal when his neat turn is crucially intercepted by Cadamuro. Much better from Lucescu's side.
Real Sociedad win the first corner of the game after Pyatov's poor clearance gifts the visitors possession. Pardo sweeps a neat ball over the defence for Vela but his angled drive is excellently blocked by Srna.
Shakhtar finally manage to get the ball down the other end and Bernard produces a neat stepover to feint beyond Cadamuro but his cross is too close to Bravo who plucks the ball out of the air.
Shakhtar haven't got out of their own half yet and Pyatov is forced into the first save of the match when he gets down low to gather Vela's shot from the edge of the box.
It's been a terrific start from the visitors and Elustondo dinks a neat ball over the Shakhtar defence but Vela is adjudged narrowly offside.
Despite the chilly weather and the hostile atmosphere, Real Sociedad have settled really well here. Cadamuro comes forward from right-back but his cross into the box is easily cleared by Rakitskiy.
The referee blows his whistle and Shakhtar, in their traditional orange and black striped shirts, get the game underway. Can the Ukrainian champions win their first Champions League home match in five games? Let's find out...
When Shakhtar are in full flow, there are few finer sights in football. The Real Sociedad defence have looked clueless at times and have been run ragged by the attacking Brazilian combination.
The two sides emerge from the tunnel and onto the pristine Donbass Arena playing service. A huge roar goes around the stands with plenty of orange flags being waved by the home support. Captains Darijo Srna and Xabi Prieto begin the handshakes as the famous Champions League anthem echoes around the stadium. The stage is set and kick-off awaits...
Real Sociedad also make four changes to the side which defeated Celta Vigo 4-3 at the weekend. Mikel Gonzalez, Zaldua, Markel Bergara and David Zurutuza drop out of the side with Liassine Cadamuro, Gorka Elustondo, Jon Ansotegi and Pardo coming in. Carlos Vela has scored their sole goal of the group stages and leads the line.
Mircea Lucescu makes four changes to the side which won 4-0 at the weekend, with Andriy Pyatov, Yaroslav Rakitskiy, Vyacheslav Shevchuk and Bernard replacing Anton Kanibolotskiy, Dmytro Chygrynskiy, Ismaily and Taison. Alex Teixeira is their leading goalscorer in the competition with two goals, both of which came against Real Sociedad.
REAL SOCIEDAD (4-3-3): Bravo; Cadamuro, Ansotegi, I. Martinez, De la Bella; Elustondo, Pardo, Prieto (c); Castro, Vela, Griezmann.
SHAKHTAR DONESTSK (4-2-3-1): Pyatov; Srna (c), Kucher, Rakitskiy, Shevchuk; Fred, Stepanenko; Douglas Costa, Bernard, Teixeira; Luiz Adriano.
Without further ado, let's bring you tonight's lineups...
Shakhtar also scored four in a routine win at the weekend, defeating Sevastopol 4-0, with goals from Taison, Dmytro Chygrinskiy, Luiz Adriano and Darijo Srna. It signalled their 28th home league win in their last 31 home league games.
Real Sociedad, as you may know, are capable of the spectacular however and Mexican striker Carlos Vela scored all four goals at the weekend as Arraste's side came from 3-1 down to beat Celta Vigo 4-3.
The Spaniards will also have to deal with the weather as it is a chilly night in Ukraine, with temperatures currently at -2 degrees celsius. Add to that the fact that Shakhtar have not lost in their last 31 league home matches or in their two Champions League matches this season and the task seems even more formidable. Can La Real overcome the odds and earn their first three points of the group stages? Bringing you all the action from the Donbass Arena, my name is Max Bentley.
However, Jagoba Arraste's side are desperate for a win themselves and they have only one point from their first four matches, having secured a 0-0 draw with Manchester United on matchday four. It is simple for the Spaniards: fail to win and they will be eliminated.
By the end of this evening, one of Shakhtar Donetsk or Real Sociedad could be knocked out of the UEFA Champions League. It's a battle of third vs. fourth in Group A with both teams desperate for the three points to retain their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages. Two goals from Alex Teixeira handed Mircea Lucescu's side a 2-0 win at the San Sebastian in the reverse fixture and the Ukrainian champions know that only a victory at home tonight would do if they wish to close the gap on Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen.
