Real Sociedad-Bayer Leverkusen Preview: Hyypia's men hoping to seal last-16 place

The Bundesliga outfit travel to Basque country needing only to better Shakhtar Donetsk's result against Manchester United to book their place in the knockout stage

Bayer Leverkusen’s Champions League hopes remain in the balance ahead of their trip to Real Sociedad in Group A on Tuesday.

Sami Hyypia's side travel to Spain needing to better Shakhtar Donetsk's result against Manchester United to progress to the last 16 of the competition.

They currently sit a point behind the Ukrainian outfit in the group, but boast the superior head-to-head record, having won 4-0 at home before drawing 0-0 in Donetsk.

Both sides were dealt heavy defeats last time out, Leverkusen being thumped 5-0 at home by United, while Sociedad were beaten 4-0 in Ukraine.

Jagoba Arrasate's side have only pride to play for in their final group match, with just one point earned from their five games so far, leaving them unable to secure third spot and the place in the Europa League that comes with it.

Both sides come into the game in strong positions domestically, with the hosts sitting sixth in La Liga, six points adrift of the Champions League qualifying berth, after three wins from their last four games.

Leverkusen currently lie second in the Bundesliga, four points off leaders Bayern Munich after Saturday's 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund - their fourth league win in a row.

The German outfit will be hopeful of a better result than their last trip to Spain, when they were demolished 7-1 by a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona in the last 16 of the competition two years ago.

Overall, Leverkusen's record in Spain is poor, with just two wins from 13 visits, including nine defeats. Their last victory came against Deportivo La Coruna in the second group stage of the 2001-02 season and you have to go back to October 2002 to find their last win outside Germany in the competition: a 2-0 success at Maccabi Haifa, 15 matches ago.

Sociedad, meanwhile, have never lost at home to German opposition, with two wins and a draw from three matches, although their last meeting with any Bundesliga outfit was back in the 1988-89 season, in what was then the UEFA Cup.
