Maxwell Konadu’s men bagged the three points at stake after beating Congo 1-0 at the Free State Stadium in the CHAN tournament ongoing in South Africa
Ghana’s Local Black Stars won their first group match at the 2014 CHAN tournament in South Africa by beating Congo 1-0 in Bloemfontein.
Medeama Sc midfielder, Theophilus Anobaah, produced the only goal of the match in the 34th minute after his strike took a deflection.
Ghana started the first half on a good note with several clever incursions but their opponents rose to the occasion each time. With 11 minutes to end the first half, man-of-the-match, Anobaah beat goalkeeper, Kiwoko Mouyaki to break the deadlock.
Before Anobaah’s goal, Yahaya Mohammed, had already threatened the Red Devils.
Congo managed to create their own decent chances which could have earned them the equaliser but they failed to take advantage of those chances.
Lorro Nkolo was the worst culprit after failing to convert the best chance of the match. He was just five meters away from goalkeeper, Stephen Adams, but could not find the back of the net.
The second half was quite similar to the trend in the first half but fell slightly short of the numerous chances created in the first half.
Head coach, Maxwell Konadu had earlier sent a clear message to his opponents by naming an attacking-minded squad.
This is the first time the Stars have won their first group match at the CHAN tournament after drawing with Zimbabwe in 2009, and losing to South Africa in 2011.
2009 finalists, Ghana will next play against Libya and Ethiopia on January 17 and 21 respectively.
