The Peoples Elephant must beat their Yenagoa-based opponents well if they are serious about their resurgence and a place among the elite clubs in the countryEnyimba slowed down from their last Sunday's heroics at the Enyimba International Stadium where they overawed and defeated reigning league leaders Kano Pillars 3-0 in a Week 11 NPFL tie with a surprise loss in Bauchi against Wikki Tourists.
They are back to their familiar terrain at Aba later this evening when they lock horns with second placed Bayelsa United in a Week 13 encounter where they will strive to revive their season with another impressive win before their impatient fans.
Football fans, purists and analysts are still at a loss as to the reason why the Peoples Elephant have only made themselves a mid-table club with such top notch pre season they had and the type of shrewd recruitment done during the off season.
The club also acquired the services of seasoned coaches in Salisu Yusuf, Imama Amapakabor and Paul Aigbogun to steer the Aba Millionaires to greatness again after about two years in limbo by Enyimba high standards.
If Enyimba are to show they are a force to reckon with, the reason of today's tie will tell so much about their aspirations. It will explain if they are truly back or whether they have only been flattering to deceive their supporters.
With Josiah Maduabuchi, Ayo Saka, Amanfor Chimezie, Femi Thomas, Uwadiegwu Ugwu and other top stars they have the players to get a decent result and what they need to do is just to put their acts together so as to bring smiles back to the faces of their fans.
Bayelsa United on the hand are typical example of a patient dog that eats the fattest bone. The Yenagoa based club were initially at the top some years back when they won the league shield. That was in 2009 but they allowed that to get to their head and the result was their steady decline which became known a year later when they exited from the 2010 Caf Champions League in the first round. They were also relegated to the lower league that same season.
The club is back to the elite division class now and their poaching of former Wikki Tourists, Kano Pillars gaffer, Isa Ladan Bosso. The club also got to Sharks of Port Harcourt who are currently in financial crisis to raid some of their top players among other stars they acquired to bolster those that secured the premier league ticket last season.
Though the club have been struggling with their away fixtures with just only two points( El Kanemi 2-2 Bayelsa United (Week 4) and Rangers 1-1Bayelsa United(Week11) on the road they have ensured they garnered all points at home. They have won all six home fixtures and with the two points from away they are now second with 20 points behind league leaders, Pillars.
The stage is set for this evening tie at Aba with a wanton leap in their placement on the league log for whoever that scoop the three points. For Enyimba it will be a return to the top six while Bayelsa United could usurp Pillars as new league leaders with a surprise victory against the Peoples Elephant.
