Liverpool were undone by a late Elsar Zverotic goal, as they failed to seal a place in the next round with Young Boys earning a 2-2 draw at Anfield. (see full report here).

In the pool's other match, Anzhi Makhachkala secured qualification to the last 32 with a comfortable 2-0 victory over a disappointing Udinese side in Moscow.

Guus Hiddink's men dominated from the off, and were unlucky not to be ahead after Zeljko Brkic denied Oleg Shatov, with Samuel Eto'o firing wide soon after.

The Russian side stepped up their efforts in the second half, and finally took the lead as Mbark Boussoufa's cross was headed in by Christopher Samba.

Eto'o eventually doubled the lead firing past the goalkeeper after good work by strike partner Lacina Traore, before Willians was sent off for Udinese as the Zebrette ultimately suffered elimination from the Europa League.

Atletico Madrid moved past the challenge of Hapoel Tel-Aviv, as they qualified for the next round with a 1-0 win at home. (see full report here).

Elsewhere, Viktoria Plzen also booked their place, despite being pegged back late on by Academica in Coimbra.

Pavel Horvath opened the scoring after David Stipek's mazy run was stop in the box by Joao Dias. Up stepped the captain to score from the spot, and put the Czech visitors ahead.

It would be a penalty appeal that would scupper Plzen's lead as Salim Cisse took a tumble inside the box with two minutes to go. Edinho equalised, but the point would not help Academica at all, as Viktoria threw their name into the hat for December's draw.

Olympique de Marseille crashed out of the Europa League with a narrow and frustrating 1-0 defeat to Turkish giants Fenerbahce at Stade Velodrome.

Elie Baup's men were without a number of key stars, and fielded a relatively inexperienced side, and were dominating early on, with Volkan Demirel kept busy by the enterprising Andre Ayew.

It would take a special goal to beat Steve Mandanda and that proved the case as Bektir Irtegun emulated the efforts of AC Milan's Philippe Mexes in the Champions League on Wednesday, as he produced a fantastic bicycle kick after chesting the loose ball with 40 minutes on the clock.

Marseille could not penetrate the Fener defence soon after, as they were frustrated time and again, as Ayew and Morgan Amalfitano saw chances spurned.

Rod Fanni smashed against the crossbar with seconds to go, but Aykut Kocaman's men held out to qualify from Group C as winners.

In Germany, Borussia Monchengladbach joined them as they rallied to a 2-0 victory over ten-man AEL Limassol at Borussia Park.

AEL were resolute throughout, but the 76th minute red card shown to Luciano Bebe sought to open the floodgates for Lucien Favre's men.

Igor de Camargo struck twice in the final 10 minutes to seal the Bundesliga side's place in the next round.

Newcastle booked their place in the next round but were held by battling Maritimo at St James Park on Thursday (full report here).

Meanwhile, Bordeaux topped the group with a game to go, as well as securing their place after Christmas with a comfortable 2-1 win over Club Brugge.

The Ligue 1 side took the lead after just three minutes when Mariano's cross was converted in by Jussie, who finished with aplomb past Vladan Kujovic.

The Brazilian doubled his tally just before half-time as Maxime Lestienne's 86th minute goal proved to be scant consolation. Francis Gillot's side host Newcastle United at Stade Cheban-Delmas on matchday six to decide top spot.

MOLDE 1 2 COPENHAGEN

Molde were eliminated from the Europa League on Thursday as Copenhagen maintained their slim hopes with a narrow win in Norway.

Cesar Santin opened the scoring from the penalty spot, delicately chipping the ball into the middle after 21 minutes.

Daniel Chima equalised midway through the second half, but the Danish side roared back into the lead courtesy of Rurik Gislason, as the visitors blew Group E wide open ahead of the final round of matches.

Stuttgart dismantled Steaua Bucharest with a stunning 5-1 victory over the group leaders in the Romanian capital.

Serdar Tasci opened the scoring after five minutes when Zdravko Kuzmanovic's delivery from the corner was met powerfully by the former Germany international, who headed into the net.

The lead was doubled 13 minutes later as the Serbian claimed another assist. The midfielder's free-kick was poorly misjudged by the goalkeeper as Martin Harnik diverting the ball into the net.

The German side's onslaught continued, and this soon paid dividends. Shinji Okazaki showed brilliant movement to evade his marker as he teed up Gotoku Sakai, who scored first-time with a skillful volley.

Eight minutes later, and with just 31 minutes on the clock, the favour was returned as Sakai fed a delightful cross into Okazaki, who made it 4-0. It was five just after the break, as Bruno Labbadia's men ran rampant in the capital, with Okazaki bagging his second of the evening.

Mihai Costea reduced the deficit with seven minutes to go but it proved a mere consolation as the top three sides in Group E are now separated by just three points. Steaua play Copenhagen as Stuttgart encounter the already-eliminanted Molde.

PSV suffered elimination as Dnipro secured a 2-1 victory at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven.

The Dutch side took the lead on 18 minutes as Atiba Hutchinson carved out a superb opening for Georginio Wijnaldum, whose powerful low finish ended in the back of the net.

The lead lasted mere minutes however, as Yevhen Seleznyov tapped in after great work from Ivan Strinic to restore parity.

Evgeni Konoplyanka scored the all-important second goal for Dnipro, as they confirmed their place in the next round. Jaba Kanava later saw red for the visitors.

AIK Solna brought down the curtain on an emotional evening at the Rasunda Stadium, as the last-ever game at the iconic venue of the 1958 FIFA World Cup final witnessed it's last match.

Nevertheless, on a poignant occasion, Serie A side Napoli broke the deadlock midway through a competitive first-half as Blerim Dzemaili turned in from Edinson Cavani's cut-back pass.

The Swedes were back in it, however, as Viktor Lundberg's cross was failed to be dealt with by a static Neapolitan defence, as Helgi Danielsson headed in past Antonio Rosati.

Salvatore Aronica was sent off later on, and the last-ever goal scored at the Rasunda would be Edinson Cavani's 90th minute penalty - enough to send Walter Mazzarri's men through.
