Player Ratings: Sunderland 1-2 Tottenham

Andre Villas-Boas' side secure the win after going behind to a John O'Shea effort as a Carlos Cuellar own-goal and Aaron Lennon solo effort seal three points on Wearside

By Simon Sinclair at the Stadium of Light

  • Simon Mignolet

    Simon Mignolet

Safe and assured performance in the Sunderland goal. Could do nothing with Tottenham's goals but made great saves to deny Defoe and Adebayor late in the game.

  • Matthew Kilgallon

    Matthew Kilgallon

His lack of pace was exposed on occasions by Lennon but he was dominant in the air. Should have done a lot better tracking Lennon for Tottenham's second goal as he allowed him to coast past and put the ball beyond Mignolet.

  • John O'Shea
    2
    0
    3.50

    John O'Shea

Made a crucial interception to stop Defoe latching on to a through ball early on. Showed good instincts to poke home after Lloris parried Fletcher's shot. Left the game with an injury in the second half.

  • Carlos Javier Cuéllar

Carlos Javier Cuéllar Flop of the Match

Struggled with the speed of the Tottenham attacks. Made a few bad clearances and almost scored an own-goal when he attempted to clear a shot from Defoe. Eventually put the ball into his own net from Walker's corner.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    2.50

    Sebastian Larsson

His accuracy from dead-ball situations had Tottenham worried all afternoon. Was combative in midfield and like his team-mates adopted a physical approach. Struggled to match his intensity after the break.

  • Craig Gardner

    0
    3.00

    Craig Gardner

Gave as good as he got in a physical tussle with Bale down the Tottenham left. Had a few lapses against the Welshman and almost allowed Naughton in behind the defence but was saved by a last-ditch tackle from O'Shea. Lucky escape as he clipped Bale in the box, but the Welshman was booked for diving.

  • Jack Colback

    2.50

    Jack Colback

Was neat and tidy in possession and did a decent job in shielding his defence in the first half but faded drastically in the second where he was invisible in the middle.

  • Adam Johnson
    2
    2
    3.00

    Adam Johnson

Made a few excellent runs which tested Naughton. Could have got an assist had he and Fletcher been on the same page. Tracked back well to help Gardner double up on Bale when he could.

  • James McClean
    1
    1
    2.00

    James McClean

Lost possession at crucial moments as he looked to drive the Black Cats up the pitch. Put in a few rash challenges which on another day could have put his team in trouble.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon
    1
    3
    1.50

    Stéphane Sessegnon

Did not have his best game. Lost possession on a number of occasions and struggled to hold the ball when under duress from Sandro and Demble, his movement was non-existent as did not give his team-mates an option.

  • Steven Fletcher
    0
    3
    3.00

    Steven Fletcher

Had a good game. Was denied by Lloris before O'Shea gave Sunderland the lead. Always gave his team-mates on option to hit up front where his distribution was excellent and his movement gave Dawson problems at the back.

Substitutions

    Titus Bramble

Replaced O'Shea after the Irishman went off injured and was fairly solid.

  • Fraizer Campbell

    2.50

    Fraizer Campbell

Ineffectual in his time on the pitch as failed create anything meaningful on the right wing during his 20 minutes on the pitch.

  • Connor Wickham

    Connor Wickham

On late as a substitute for Larsson

  • Hugo Lloris
    12

    3.50

    Hugo Lloris

His handling and kicking were fine and the Frenchman always seemed to be alert to danger as he made the right decisions to come for the ball. Unlucky to concede O'Shea's goal as he made a great stop to deny Fletcher immediately beforehand.

  • Kyle Naughton
    3
    5
    2.50

    Kyle Naughton

The former Sheffield United man was suspect in dealing with Johnson in the first half but, when the England man switched flanks, he seemed to have the measure of Campbell. Could have supported Bale more than he did.

  • Michael Dawson
    1
    6
    2.50

    Michael Dawson

Gave away a few cheap free kicks which allowed Sunderland to regroup in the Spurs half after attacks had broken down. Had a tough time keeping with Fletcher's movement.

  • Kyle Walker
    8
    4
    3.50

    Kyle Walker

Raided forward well and supported Lennon as much as possible. Strong in the tackle as he endured a physical battle with McClean. Great delivery from corner forced Cuellar to head into his own net. Good performance in the second half defensively as he quelled the threat of Johnson.

  • Steven Caulker
    7
    0
    3.00

    Steven Caulker

Decent performance but he seemed more comfortable dealing with Sessegnon rather than Fletcher. Like Dawson gave away a few cheap free kicks which could have been costly.

  • Aaron Lennon
    9

Aaron Lennon Top of the Match

Caused Kilgallon a lot of problems down the right after beating the full-back but sometimes his delivery was poor, as on too many occasions the ball went over the heads of Defoe and Adebayor. Scored a great goal to give Tottenham the lead, skipping past several tackles before slotting home.

  • Gareth Bale
    8
    8
    2.00

    Gareth Bale

Drifted in from the left and caused a lot of problems with his direct running, particularly at O'Shea and Cuellar. Was inconsistent but lacked support of Naughton which would have helped. Harshly booked for diving.

  • Moussa Dembele
    10
    0
    3.00

    Moussa Dembele

Scooped up all the loose play in midfield and helped drive Spurs forward. Always looked to bring Lennon and Bale into the game at every opportunity with some excellent distribution.

  • Sandro
    7
    1
    3.00

    Sandro

Had a quiet first half but stepped up a gear in the second as he helped dominate the middle of the park, with some great tackling and good positional play as he protected his back four from Sessegnon.

  • Emmanuel Adebayor
    5
    8
    1.50

    Emmanuel Adebayor

Should have given his side the lead in the 30th minute but could not bundle the ball over the line. Lacked appetite for physical battle against Cuellar and O'Shea as he often went missing. Was well denied by Mignolet in the second half, not his best game.

  • Jermain Defoe
    5
    2
    3.50

    Jermain Defoe

Dangerous in and around the box. His movement gave the Sunderland defence problems. His deflected shot should have given Spurs the lead in the 30th minute. Had effort well saved by Mignolet.
