Player Ratings: Chelsea 0-0 Fulham

The Blues offered little in Rafael Benitez's second game in charge and could have been punished by a Fulham side who had chances of their own in the second half at Stamford Bridge

By Oliver Platt

  • Petr Cech
    22
    4
    3.50

    Petr Cech

Had more saves to make than Schwarzer, which he would not have expected to be the case, but most of them were fairly routine. Probably most severely tested twice by Riise but dealt with both efforts confidently.

  • Branislav Ivanovic
    16

    3.00

    Branislav Ivanovic

Defended more sensibly than Luiz and caused a few problems at set pieces but, once Berbatov had got the ball and controlled it, he struggled to get it off him.

  • Ashley Cole
    17
    5
    3.00

    Ashley Cole

Endeavoured to attack down the left but could not find the space inside or outside to make much of an impact. Untroubled defensively.

  • David Luiz
    15
    11
    2.50

    David Luiz

Tried to be more aggressive and, while his intention was admirable as he looked to inject some urgency, the results were often mixed. On one occasion, he completely unnecessarily gave away a free kick on the edge of the area.

  • César Azpilicueta
    17
    14
    3.00

    César Azpilicueta

A threat in spells down the right, whipping in some dangerous crosses. Had no problems cancelling out the threat posed by Rodallega but the trickier Frei was more of a handful.

  • Ryan Bertrand
    3
    38
    1.50

Ryan Bertrand Flop of the Match

Ineffective on the left flank before he was substituted shortly after the hour mark. Offered little in an attacking sense and Riether occasionally charged beyond him into space.

  • Oriol Romeu
    7
    32
    2.50

    Oriol Romeu

Distributed the ball from side to side but achieved little in terms of penetrative passes aimed into the final third.

  • Ramires
    6
    32
    2.00

    Ramires

Looked to break beyond Romeu but simply ran into an area of the pitch which was heavily congested by the likes of Diarra and Sidwell.

  • Oscar
    10
    31
    2.50

    Oscar

Like Hazard, he had little space in which to operate. Tried to inject some creativity but more often than not was crowded out and lost possession.

  • Eden Hazard
    12
    32
    2.50

    Eden Hazard

Chelsea's attacking build-up was so slow that it was impossible for him to find any space into which to run. When he did spot gaps, he looked threatening but was mostly restricted to aiming hopeful through-balls. Substituted late in the game.

  • Fernando Torres
    47
    28
    3.00

    Fernando Torres

His control was often superb but his finishing was not. Looked a threat in the box and brought crosses down with ease, but lacked conviction in his shooting and, the only time when he troubled Schwarzer, Hughes was able to clear in the six-yard box.

Substitutions

  • Marko Marin
    38
    6

    Marko Marin

A late arrival for his Premier League debut but did not have time to make an impact and swing the match in Chelsea's favour.

  • Juan Mata
    11
    19
    3.00

    Juan Mata

It will be complained that he should have featured from the start. Delivered a couple of dangerous balls into the box, almost immediately swinging in a superb corner, but could not quite make the difference.

  • Mark Schwarzer
    3
    0
    3.00

    Mark Schwarzer

Aside from a Torres shot that rolled straight into his arms, he had no saves to make and was rarely troubled by crosses.

  • John Arne Riise
    4
    1
    2.50

    John Arne Riise

Generally kept Hazard at bay but Azpilicueta caused him problems when he overlapped. Did not show as much attacking intent as might have been expected until he broke to latch onto Karagounis' pass only to make a mess of his finish. Did test Cech with one powerful shot from 20 yards.

  • Philippe Senderos
    4
    2
    3.00

    Philippe Senderos

Stepped out of defence to make some good interceptions and did not allow very much to sneak behind him. Fulham sat deep and it suited him. Perhaps fortunate, however, to get away with obstruction on Ivanovic in the box at a set piece.

  • Aaron Hughes
    5
    0
    3.00

    Aaron Hughes

More mobile than Senderos, which allowed him to keep a tight leash on Torres. Struggled a little more when the ball came in from wide areas but helped to ensure Schwarzer had a quiet night.

  • Sascha Riether
    8
    0
    3.50

Sascha Riether Top of the Match

Totally nullified any threat Bertrand might have provided and broke forward to support the midfield, once getting as far as the edge of the box before Luiz brought him down. Calm on the ball and rock-solid at the back.

  • Steve Sidwell
    6
    0
    3.50

    Steve Sidwell

Busy at both ends of the pitch and delivered a tempting cross in the first half that could have caused problems had any Fulham player attacked it.

  • Giorgos Karagounis
    6
    1
    3.00

    Giorgos Karagounis

Muted in the first half, struggling to find space and support Berbatov, but improved after the break. Chipped a fine pass into Riise, who should have done better, and provided more of an option for Fulham to play out to.

  • Damien Duff
    3
    2
    2.50

    Damien Duff

Anonymous as an attacker but deserves some credit for limiting the effectiveness of Cole when he tried to attack. Riether was never left overwhelmed.

  • Mahamadou Diarra
    4
    0
    3.50

    Mahamadou Diarra

Played very well in holding midfield before being substituted, looking tired, shortly after the hour mark. Tackled effectively and tracked back into his own box to make one crucial stop after Chelsea had found a gap.

  • Dimitar Berbatov
    12
    2
    3.50

    Dimitar Berbatov

Did excellently, often with little support, to hold the ball up and give Fulham some chance of getting a foothold in the final third. Rarely had the service to cause many problems closer to goal, though.

  • Hugo Rodallega
    1
    4
    2.00

    Hugo Rodallega

Took one well-struck shot in the first half but otherwise was very limited in what he offered to Fulham's attack. Replaced by Petric in the second half.

Substitutions

  • Chris Baird
    3
    1
    3.00

    Chris Baird

Replaced Diarra at the base of midfield and did largely the same job, digging in when he needed to as Chelsea applied pressure late in the game.

  • Kerim Frei
    6
    0
    3.00

    Kerim Frei

Lively after coming on in the second half, dancing into the box on one occasion before going to ground, but referee Anthony Taylor was unmoved.

  • Mladen Petric
    3
    3

    Mladen Petric

Had one chance to snatch a winner for Fulham but could not control Riether's cross.
