Player Ratings: Tottenham 3-1 West Ham

Jermain Defoe scored twice and Gareth Bale was on target in a rampant Spurs performance, while Andy Carroll finally ended his goal drought with a header late on

By Jamie Dunn

  • Hugo Lloris

    Hugo Lloris

Parried a Matt Jarvis shot after the interval after a quiet first half, but displayed great reactions to deny the winger a certain equaliser.

    Jan Vertonghen

Pressed forward early on and provided for Defoe who could not convert. Another fine display from the Belgian, who continues to deputise well at left-back.

    Michael Dawson

Preferred to William Gallas and showed why by handing Andy Carroll little change throughout.

  • Kyle Walker

    Kyle Walker

An improved performance from the right-back, who was rarely threatened on the right-hand side as Sam Allardyce made an early change, bringing off Modibo Maiga for Matt Jarvis.

  • Steven Caulker

    Steven Caulker

An assured performance from the young centre-back, who looked comfortable in the heart of the Spurs defence.

    Tom Huddlestone

Assured as ever in his passing, but wayward with attempts on goal. Helped Sandro dominate the midfield and broke up play to launch the attack for Spurs' third goal.

  • Aaron Lennon

    Aaron Lennon

Selflessly provided for Jermain Defoe for Spurs' third with only Jussi Jaaskelainen to beat. Came off towards the end for the recovering Mousa Dembele.

  • Gareth Bale

    Gareth Bale

Drifted off the left and rattled the bar with a rasping drive in the first half. Foiled by Jaaskelainen after the break but latched onto a Dempsey pass to score in a game where the Welshman was, as ever, one of Tottenham's brightest sparks.

  • Sandro

    3.50

    Sandro

Entered into a battle with Mohamed Diame and came out on top over the course of the game. Displayed both the physical and creative aspects of his game in a commanding performance. Worryingly stretchered off in the closing stages for Jake Livermore.

  • Clint Dempsey

    Clint Dempsey

Forced Jussi Jaaskelainen into a fairly comfortable save in the first half and fired another shot over. Had the Hammers goalkeeper beaten after the break but hit the post. The American's fortunes changed when his beautifully lifted pass found Gareth Bale to extend Spurs' lead. Arguably the former Fulham man's finest performance since joining Tottenham.

  • Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe Top of the Match

Booked for bringing down Winston Reid as the defender attempted to clear, but had the last word of the opening 45 minutes with a brilliant solo run capped off by a typically powerful finish to open the scoring. Given the simple task of tapping into an empty net by Aaron Lennon for Tottenham's third, but perhaps lucky to avoid a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Joey O'Brien. Replaced by Gylfi Sigurdsson in stoppage time to an ovation from the home fans.

Came on for the injured Sandro with just a few minutes to play.

  • Jussi Jaaskelainen

    Jussi Jaaskelainen

Beaten at his near post by Jermain Defoe in the first half as his defence backed off, but could do little about the second as Gareth Bale found himself unmarked just a few yards from goal. Could do nothing as Defoe rounded off the scoring.

  • Winston Reid

    Winston Reid

Found the triple threat of Jermain Defoe, Clint Dempsey and the wandering Gareth Bale difficult to deal with. One of a handful of defenders to back off as Jermain Defoe opened the scoring.

    George McCartney

Stood up to the threat of Aaron Lennon for an hour but was nowhere to be seen as the winger set up Jermain Defoe for Tottenham's third.

    James Tomkins

Similarly to Winston Reid, the centre-back failed to come to terms with a rampant, positive Spurs performance.

  • Joey O'Brien

    Joey O'Brien

Yellow carded for launching into a crunching tackle on Gareth Bale after just six minutes, and found it difficult to shackle the Welsh winger from then on. Foiled late on by the Spurs defence.

  • Kevin Nolan

    Kevin Nolan

Plenty of industry but equal amounts of frustration for the midfielder, who couldn't threaten the Spurs goal as he so often does. Provided for Matt Jarvis on two occasions but saw his team-mate denied by Hugo Lloris, and was substituted for Carlton Cole.

  • Mark Noble

    Mark Noble

Booked for bringing down Aaron Lennon as the winger looked to break in the first half and was beaten far too easily by Defoe as Tottenham went in front.

  • Mohamed Diame

    Mohamed Diame

Hustled Sandro and the Spurs midfield as the Hammers struggled to get a grip on proceedings in the first half. The game got away from West Ham after the break, but the midfielder was one of few plus points for Sam Allardyce.

  • Gary O'Neil

    Gary O'Neil

Only lasted 54 minutes and saw little of the action in a game that passed him by, despite West Ham having numbers in midfield. Replaced by Matt Taylor.

    Andy Carroll

Little to no chances of note for the England international, but managed to head home with 10 minutes to play from a looping header.
