Live Commentary

  • So that's three more points for Everton, three more goals conceded by Southampton, and a very happy Goodison crowd on this fine Saturday afternoon. Thanks for joining us and commenting - good bye for now.
  • While the Saints defence was again leaky today, Nigel Adkins didn't get his tactics right at all. The high pressing game Southampton adopted early on allowed David Moyes' side time and space down the flanks, and that usually only results in one outcome these days.
  • Southampton started brightly, but they simply could not cope with the physicality and skill of Everton today. Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman were constant threats down either flank, while Nikica Jelavic and Marouane Fellaini were simply unplayable at times.
  • And that is it! Everton record another good win to carry on their fine early form in this campaign, but Nigel Adkins will be rueing a missed opportunity for his Saints side after they Jay Rodriguez could, and perhaps should have put them 2-0 early on in the first half.
  • 90' + 3'
Jagielka sees out ball as Lambert attempts to get through, and that should be it...
  • 90' + 2'
    SubstitutionLeon Osman Sylvain Distin
  • 90' + 2'
Leon Osman leaves the pitch to a standing ovation as Sylvin Distin comes on to close things up for the hosts - not really sure that's needed to be honest, as we could be playing all evening and Southampton would probably still be searching for the two goals they need.
  • 90'
    SubstitutionAdam Lallana Richard Chaplow
  • 90'
We're in to injury time, and it'll have to be special from Southampton now.
  • 89'
Fellaini has his eyes on the prize here and elects to try and volley it in front 25 yards here, but he hits it high and wide. He's good, but he's maybe not that good.
  • 87'
Despite the fine chance for Ramirez and Lambert's headed effort, Southampton have created very little in this second half, which will be a huge disappointment for Nigel Adkins considering Everton's laid-back attitude in the final 45 minutes.
  • 84'
Good stop from Howard! A fine cross is whipped in and Lambert powers an effort at goal from the left-hand side. It looks destined for the net, but the American keeper manages to punch it away from underneath his crossbar.
  • 82'
Ramirez has a good opportunity on the edge of the area, but instead of hitting it first time with his right foot, he elects to move it on to his left foot - but only succeeds in bending it high into the crowd. Poor from the £12 million man there, who has struggled since his early goal.
  • 81'
    SubstitutionNathaniel Clyne Ben Reeves
  • 81'
    SubstitutionJay Rodriguez Emmanuel Mayuka
  • 80'
    SubstitutionKevin Mirallas Bryan Oviedo
  • 80'
Last roll of the dice from Adkins as Mayuka and Reeves are on for Rodriguez and Clyne. Rodriguez has been very disappointing, and Clyne hasn't had the same impact as he did last week against VIlla when he nabbed a fine goal.
  • 77'
Anichebe is on, and takes a rather painful hit in a rather painful area there. Mirallas goes off after a fine performance, and new signing Ovideo is on. The game is slipping away from the Saints here, who will really need to up the tempo and commit men forward.
  • 76'
    SubstitutionNikica Jelavic Victor Anichebe
  • 72'
Everton could have finished the game there, with Pienaar breaking into the area, but he hits a poor pass to Fellaini who can't hold on to the ball 10 yards out. The Belgian isn't happy with the South African, and it's still all to play for.
  • 71'
The crowd is quiet, and Everton have gone a little flat here. David Moyes might need to introduce a substitute or two to maker sure the hosts close this one out without too much fuss.
  • 69'
So close from Ramirez! Lambert finds the Uruguayan with a beautiful clipped pass in behind the Everton defence, and the midfielder lifts the ball up and over the onrushing Tim Howard, but the shot bounces agonisingly wide. The Saints could have really done with that, but it's more promising from the visitors with 20 minutes remaining.
  • 67'
Gazzaniga makes a fine stop to deny Mirallas. The Belgian has time and space to pick up a pass, turn, and shoot from 25 yards, but the young goalkeeper gets down well to parry away the drive. So much time and space for the midfielder there, and he'll be disappointed he didn't do better.
  • 64'
That's better from Southampton here as they work the ball to the byline, but cannot sort themselves out in time to find time and space and the chance is wasted. A minute later, a promising cross is hoofed out of play when Lambert and Co. are waiting for a chance - Adkins looks a tad annoyed on the touchline.
  • 62'
Rodriguez wastes another cross here, hitting it high, wide, and not at all handsomely. He will be disappointed with his performance today, especially given that poor miss that could have put his side two up earlier on.
  • 61'
Fellaini has an effort from the edge of the box after {yet again) finding time and space with his strength, but his low effort is well held by Gazzaniga.
  • 59'
So close from Osman! A cross drifts to the back post which Coleman recovers, and the ball eventually ends up with the midfielder on the edge of the box. Everybody knows what he wants to do, and he duly curls a delightful effort just wide of Gazzaniga's left-hand post. This could be a long day for Adkins and his team if they don't snap out of their stupour.
  • 58'
Fellaini goes close! He is fouled 30 yards from goal, but plays on and practically stumbles into a wonderful effort at goal that takes a deflection out for a corner. What a wonderful player the Belgian is on this form.
  • 56'
Everton up the tempo a little here - one of the Merseyside club's main strengths is their ability to snap out of a comfortable pace and immediately threaten, which Southampton cannot deal with.
  • 55'
Rodriguez has a tame header at goal that is comfortable for Howard. Southampton are getting the ball into the box, but aren't getting forward in enough numbers to do any damage to Everton.
  • 53'
The pace is definitely slower than the first half, with David Moyes perhaps looking for his side to control possession and squeeze the life out of the game. They're still looking for goals, but are pressing the visitors to make it more difficult for the Saints in possession.
  • 50'
Lambert puts Rodriguez through on goal with a fine lofted through ball, but Jagielka does well to recover and muscle the forward off the ball. The England centre-back will be integral to Moyes' plans this season, and looks sharp today.
  • 48'
Ramirez hoofs a hopeless pass up and out for a goal kick when Lambert wanted a short ball top feet. It's a curious game that Southampton play, with a mixture of aerial strength and technical passing, and on that occasion the attackers were on opposite wavelengths. If anything, today will be a great learning curve as Everton are masters of the style Adkins is going for.
  • 47'
Everton once again looking to stretch the Saints defence by zipping the ball from wing to wing. Southampton scored four after half time against Aston Villa last weekend to get their first points of the season, and they'll need at least two today to get anything from the game.
  • 46'
And we're underway again here - can Southampton get themselves back into this game? They'll have to be a lot stronger at the back, and more incisive in the final third to break through a strong Everton side.
  • Unfortunately for Nigel Adkins, the Saints are not helping themselves by failing to close down the wings, and not getting tight enough in the middle - a recipe for disaster at Goodison Park. You've got to do one or the other, and Southampton are doing neither. A sorry show from the visitors so far.
  • Southampton started brightly here, and will rue Rodriguez's gilt-edged chance to put them 2-0 when he shanked his effort wide when clean through on goal. From then on it's been all Everton, with Nikica Jelavic and Marouane Fellaini being simply unplayable.
  • 45' + 1'
Fellaini hits the bar! It's the colossal Belgian's turn to go close now, as his headed effort crashes against the bar from a corner...and that's the half-time whistle!
  • 45'
Spare a though for poor old Paulo Gazzaniga here. Replays show he made a fantastic save from Jelavic before the big striker scored his second, as he did brilliantly to claw away a goal-bound header from the top corner. He has had no help from his defence today.
  • 43'
Fellaini is running the show for the hosts with some deft flicks and turns - he is rumoured to want a move away from Goodison, and on the form he's shown this season, he could well have the pick of Europe's top clubs next summer. Whether any other team would play to his strengths as much as Everton do by utilising his height in a forward position remains to be seen however.
  • 41'
Jelavic is close to a first half hat-trick here, being denied at the last moment by good defending from Fonte as yet another cross floats in to the box and almost findsthe Croatian's head. What a signing he is turning out to be for Moyes.
  • 40'
Everton are toying with Southampton at Goodison Park - it's as if the hosts feel that the opener was an insult, and are punishing the Saints for it. Adkins will be furious that his side have defended so ineptly - it's all well and good moving the ball about well, but Southampton look hapless at the back.
  • 38'
    Assist Seamus Coleman
  • 38'
    Goal Nikica Jelavic
THREE FOR EVERTON!!! And it's that man Jelavic again, finding a great header at the back post after a great cross from Coleman on the right wing that Gazzaniga just can't keep out of the net. Southampton are collapsing here, and it's such a shame after a bright start from the away side. They just haven't done anything to combat Everton down the flanks, and it's all too easy for the hosts here.
  • 35'
The game is getting away from Southampton here, with Everton pressing for a third. Jelavic almost gets himself another - he is on fire today. Not literally, metaphorically of course.
  • 32'
    Assist Kevin Mirallas
  • 32'
    Goal Nikica Jelavic
EVERTON ARE AHEAD! Jealvic finds a brilliant finish across Gazzaniga after fine build-up play from Fellaini and Mirallas. It was a good run from the striker, but the Saints defence really should have either played the offside trap or got in his way. In the end they did neither, and it was all too easy for the in-form striker.
  • 28'
Just before the Everton goal, Southampton were doing a fine job of pressing high up the pitch, but leaving big gaps in behind, which Everton duly exploited. That type of play is a bit naive when you've just taken the lead away from home, and while the style is commendable, you've got to feel that Adkins would want his men to sit in and defend the danger areas to frustrate the hosts.
  • 26'
Jelavic strikes an effort at goal from the right side of the 18 yard box, but pulls it wide of Gazzaniga's right post. The hosts are up and running now, and look angry.
  • 25'
    Goal Leon Osman
EQUALISER FOR EVERTON!! Mirallas whips in a devilish ball from the right which is only partially cut out, and the ball falls perfectly for Leon Osman to whip into the top corner of Gazzaniga's net from six yards out.
  • 22'
Baines and Coleman are looking like Everton's most likely chance of creating a goal here, with both seemingly being given the freedom of the wings. It's a dangerous game the Southampton defence are playing, but by packing the middle they'll be hoping to negate Everton's aerial strength when the crosses do come in.
  • 21'
Jagielka has to deal with a speculative cross and the ball flies off his head for a corner here - Howard could have given his centre-back a little more help with that one. The corner comes to nothing though.
  • 19'
Everton nudging it around on the edge of the area, but are unable to find a final ball or a finish. You feel that it's only a matter of time before somebody just has to put their foot through the ball and have an effort for the hosts.
  • 17'
Adkins will be hugely impressed by the fearlessness with which his side have set out to take the gamer to the hosts here.
  • 15'
Southampton are pushing for a second here, and looking comfortable in possession. They'll have to be wary of Everton breaking forward though. Rodriguez, Ramirez and Lallana are all looking eager to get shots in on Howard's net here.
  • 13'
Everton feel they should have had a penalty for a tackle on Jelavic there, but Lee Probert is unmoved. Replays show the Southampton player got enough of the ball, but Everton fans were incensed.
  • 11'
Rodriguez should make it two but misses! He breaks down the right wing and escapes from Heitinga, nodding the ball down into a finishing position, but as he approaches Howard, he shanks a half volley woefully wide. What a chance for Southampton to compound Everton's early misery here.
  • 10'
A really bright start from the visitors here - Ramirez and Lallana look comfortable in possession, and Lambert is working well as the focal point of the attack.
  • 8'
Heitinga almost equalises for the hosts, but his header is straight at Gazzaniga. It is shaping up to be a match of set-piece chances here, meaning it's anybody's game really.
  • 6'
    Assist Adam Lallana
  • 6'
    Goal G. Ramírez
GOAL!! Southampton are ahead! Such an easy goal for the Saints here, as a routine corner is whipped in, and nobody is picking up Gaston Ramirez, who heads in with Tim Howard stranded. That's his first in English football, and he won't score an easier one that that in the Premier League.
  • 3'
Great surging run from Coleman down the right, and his cross is not an accurate one, but almost finds the opposite top corner. Everton's full-backs are stretching the play already here, which Moyes will be pleased about.
  • 2'
Baines whips in a good cross from the left wing, and Fonte clears, only for Osman to lash a volley high and wide. An early warning there for Southampton that they'll need to get tight on their right-hand side to deny Baines those kinds of opportunities.
  • 1'
The Southampton players have a quick huddle, and we're off!
  • The sun is shining, the teams are out, and after the hand shakes we're almost ready for kick-off here...
  • Everton will undoubtedly be favourites for this one, but suffered a surprise defeat in the League Cup against Leeds United this week. Adkins' side looked in fine form in the second half against Villa last weekend, and aided by the tricky Gaston Ramirez, they could well take something from this game.
  • So Paulo Gazzaniga keeps his place in the Saints goal after displacing Kelvin Davis, and he may have a busy day on his hands with Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic providing the aerial threat up front for the hosts.
  • Southampton: Gazzaniga; Richardson, Fonte, Yoshida, Clyne; Ramirez, Steven Davis, Ward-Prowse, Lallana; Lambert, Rodriguez. Subs: Kelvin Davis, Hooiveld, Do Prado, Mayuka, Chaplow, Reeves, Puncheon.
  • The team news is in... Everton: Howard; Coleman, Heitinga, Jagielka, Baines; Mirallas, Neville, Osman, Pienaar; Fellaini, Jelavic. Subs: Mucha, Oviedo, Distin, Gueye, Vellios, Anichebe, Duffy.
  • Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of Everton - Southampton. David Moyes' side will be looking to continue their impressive start to the season, while Nigel Adkins' Saints are hoping to build on their 4-1 demolition of Aston Vila last weekend with another fine performance.
