Goal.com assesses the talent on show as Joachim Low's Nationalmannschaft got their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign under way with a routine victory

    Manuel Neuer

One of the easiest 90 minutes he will ever have. For all of the Faroes' industry at the back, they barely had the ball in the Germany half, but the Bayern keeper did make one impressive save in the dying minutes.

  • Holger Badstuber

    Holger Badstuber

Like his defensive colleagues, the 23-year-old had little to do throughout the match, but got forward well in his unfamiliar role on the left-hand side of defence, and almost scored a fortuitous equaliser.

  • Mats Hummels

    Mats Hummels

When the Faroes made a rare dart into the Germany half, the Borussia Dortmund talisman was there to prevent any danger, and got forward well too when needed. He continues to show that he deserves his place in Low's team.

  • Philipp Lahm

    3.50

    Philipp Lahm

Had one awkward moment at the back early on in the match, but was otherwise assured throughout, and was a constant threat on the right, getting forward excellently, and delivering threatening balls on more than one occasion.

  • Per Mertesacker

    3.50

    Per Mertesacker

Made an assured return to the international fold after spending the entirety of Euro 2012 on the bench, but in truth, he had little to do against a possession-starved Faroes. Did what he had to do well, though.

  • Mesut Özil

Mesut Özil Top of the Match

An absolute masterclass from the Real Madrid star, who eventually decided the game with an excellent second-half double. His first goal was particularly good, finishing a move he had started with an exquisite volley.

  • Sami Khedira

    1
    3.50

    Sami Khedira

Did a good job of anchoring the midfield on his own, got forward well, and had a hand in Ozil's second goal. As his side dominated possession, he had a very quiet evening in the defensive department, though.

  • Mario Götze

    4.00

    Mario Götze

Was his side's star in the opening period, going on a string of threatening runs, delivering some fine passes, and broke the deadlock with a fantastic individual effort. Was less active in the second half, but a great performance nonetheless.

  • Miroslav Klose

    3.50

    Miroslav Klose

May not have had the best evening in front of goal, scuffing a number of excellent chances, but got into some good positions and linked up well with his team-mates.

  • Marco Reus

    4.00

    Marco Reus

Like his colleagues in the advanced midfield positions, the former Gladbach star was active throughout, linking up well with team-mates, and assisted Ozil's second goal. Another good performance at international level.

  • Thomas Müller

    3.00

    Thomas Müller

Was handed a chance to stake his first-team credentials, and showcased his talents sporadically, but was anonymous for large periods of the game, and eventually withdrawn just after an hour.

Substitutions

  • Julian Draxler

    Julian Draxler

Was given a couple of minutes to make his second appearance for his country, but was hardly involved.

  • Andre Schürrle

    Andre Schürrle

Was not at his brilliant best, but caused problems with his pace in his cameo.

  • Lukas Podolski

    3.00

    Lukas Podolski

Did well after sitting out the friendly with Argentina, but was guilty of being slightly greedy on one occasion.

  • Gunnar Nielsen

    4.50

    Gunnar Nielsen

An absolutely fantastic performance throughout. The Manchester City keeper kept his side in the game in the first half with a string of unlikely, extraordinary saves.

  • Jónas Tór Næs

    2.00

    Jónas Tór Næs

Struggled to deal with Germany's wing-based attack for large periods of the game, and his clearances were scrappy throughout.

  • Odmar Færø

    0
    2.50

    Odmar Færø

Was a rock at centre-back for the majority of the game, but could only look on for the goals. Like Baldvinsson, he made a couple of good challenges to prevent goals, though.

  • Pól Jóhannus Justinussen

    2.00

    Pól Jóhannus Justinussen

Much like Naes, he struggled to deal with Germany's attacking full-backs, and the right wing proved to be a fruitful area of the pitch for Germany throughout.

  • Rógvi Baldvinsson
    0
    0
    2.50

    Rógvi Baldvinsson

Got off to a nervy start with a wild hack on Muller, but recovered to record a deliver a decent performance as the Faroe Islands frustrated their hosts, and made a couple of good block and tackles.

  • Frodi Benjaminsen

    0
    2.00

    Frodi Benjaminsen

Had a torrid evening, and seemed to be incapable of marshalling Germany's attacking midfield quartet. Lost in the pace of the opposition's attacks.

  • Hallur Hansson
    0
    0
    3.00

    Hallur Hansson

Was absolutely vital to his team's defensive effort as Germany dominated possession in midfield, and helped with the initial resistance to the hosts' fluid attacks.

  • Símun Samuelsen
    0
    0
    3.00

    Símun Samuelsen

Almost capitalised on a Lahm error early in the second half and won a couple of corners, but like his attacking colleagues, had no opportunity to truly shine.

  • Daniel Udsen
    0
    0
    1.50

Daniel Udsen Flop of the Match

Was absolutely anonymous throughout, and failed to take advantage of Lahm's marauds forward. Barely had the ball, and did nothing with it when in possession.

  • Christian Lamhauge Holst
    0
    0
    3.50

    Christian Lamhauge Holst

Came the closest to getting his side a consolation goal with a ferocious long-range effort in the final minutes, but saw Neuer save his strike.

  • Johan Edmundsson
    0
    0
    3.00

    Johan Edmundsson

Had an absolutely thankless task on his hands tonight, but ran at the German defenders constantly and did his best to assert his presence. Was starved of opportunities to threaten, though.

Substitutions

  • Súni Olsen

    2.50

    Súni Olsen

Was given five minutes at the end of the match, but barely touched the ball.
