PSV have progressed to the Europa League Round of 16, securing a comfortable home win in the second leg of the tie.
Trabzonspor entered the match with a one-goal deficit, having been defeated 2-1 by the hosts in the first leg. Despite needing at least two goals to reach the last 16 the Trabzon outift still held hopes of progression, evidenced by their attacking intentions in the opening stages.
The Trabzon outfit piled early pressure on the hosts and were nearly rewarded with an opener in the 7th minute. Crisp link-up play on a counter put Adin through on goal, but Isaksson did brilliantly to parry the Turk’s effort at point-blank range. PSV responded positively, but shots from Toivonen and Willems failed to trouble Tolga Zengin in the visitor goal.
The Turkish stopper was to be denied a clean sheet however, as PSV found the breakthrough from the penalty spot in the 15th minute. Trabzonspor right-back Celutska brought down Dries Mertens in the area, and the Belgian stepped up to give his side a two-goal cushion.
Both sides upped their pace following the goal, with Trabzonspor looking for a lifeline back into the tie while the hosts looked to put the match to bed early. The visitors were twice awarded a free kick in dangerous positions, but neither of Burak Yilmaz’s efforts managed to find their target. The home side dominated possession in midfield, but appeared unable to find the final ball.
All of PSV’s offensive play appeared to channel through goalscorer Mertens, and the Belgian again provided the spark his side needed in the 28th minute. The winger curled a perfectly weighted cross into the box from the left hand side, setting up Tim Matavz to head home from close range.
The home side maintained their offensive tempo, and put the tie beyond Trabzonspor’s reach ten minutes later. Labyad teed up Kevin Strootman, and the Dutch international calmly slotted past Zengin. The visitors mustered a response in the 43rd minute as they capitalized on poor defending by the hosts, with Burak Yilmaz offering his side a way back into the tie. The PSV backline failed to clear a dangerous delivery into the box, with Henrique eventually picking out the Turk on the goal line.
The visitors’ lifeline was to be shortlived however, as the Trabzon side were dealt another blow just one minute later. Goalkeeper Tolga Zengin was judged to have handled the ball outside his area, bringing down Strootman in the process. The skipper was shown no lenience by Tony Chapron and promptly dismissed.
PSV dominated the second half, visibly enjoying the freedom brought by their numerical advantage. Georginio Wijnaldum nearly extended his side’s lead in the 50th minute, but substitute keeper Onur Kivrak did well to deny the Dutchman. The Eindhoven outfit were not to be denied their fourth goal however, as Tim Matavz somewhat fortuitously netted his second of the night in the 54th minute. Kivrak again got a touch on the ball, but didn’t do enough to parry the effort of target.
Traffic was virtually one-way from thereon, with Trabzonspor appearing to have accepted their fate. PSV continued to dictate play in the visitors half, with substitute left-back Erik Pieters looking to add another dimension to his side’s already flourishing attack. The Dutch international linked up neatly with Mertens on the left flank, but neither of his crosses managed to find a teammate. Nothing became of last minute pressure from the hosts, as Yilmaz failed to spring the offside trap on more than one occasion.
The comfortable win for the Eindhoven side sees them beat the visitors 6-2 on aggregate following their earlier victory in Trabzon. They will meet Valencia in the round of 16, who advanced at the cost of Stoke City. Trabzonspor will be limited to domestic duty for the remainder of the season, and will face Mersin IY to at home on Saturday. PSV will be looking to build on this result when they welcome Feyenoord to the Philips Stadium the same day.
