MFM FC visit cross city rivals Oga Boys in the NPFL looking to boost their continental push and further dent their neighbours' title hopes
Benson Edema’s side had made a promising start to the season until their juggernauts got halted by Enyimba on Thursday, and have slipped to 14th after one win in their last three games.
A 1-0 victory at home to Lobi Stars last Sunday was their first ever win in the Nigeria topflight, few days after they laboured to hold Abia Warriors to a 1-1 draw in Lagos.
Failure to triumph in this clash would see them move southward the NPFL log. They have also struggled to score goals with two strikes in their last three games with zero goal difference.
Despite the motivated opposition and difficulty of the game, though, Sikiru Moshood is positive about the task at hand.
“It's going to be a very tough match because MFM FC are a very good side, but we cannot afford to drop a point at home again having dropped a point at home in our league opener against Abia Warriors so even it's a local derby which makes it more tight we are going for full points,” he told Goal.
MFM’s fine form will give them some hope of arresting their hosts. Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men – who are third on the log bounced back from their bashing in Ibadan to hand Sunshine Stars a 2-1 defeat and are slim favorites to remain unscathed against Oga Boys.
And Sikiru Olatunbosun says his teammates are relishing the challenge of traveling to the Onikan Stadium to face Ikorodu United.
“There is emotion, for sure. I like to play well in big games, so hopefully I can repeat that in the Lagos Derby against Ikorodu United," he told Goal.
"I've dreamt about it for a long time. I would love to get a victory on my first NPFL derby and score a goal.
"The numbers show that Ikorodu United are better at home than they are away. They are a strong team and good technically."
Coach Ilechukwu is still without goalkeeper James Aiyeyemi, who was excused from the team’s game against Sunshine Stars owing to the death of his mother, and Folarin Abayomi is expected to man the post.
Up front, Musa Newman is expected to lead the attack, as he would be supported by Ifeanyi Mathew and Chukwuka Onuwa.
