    Víctor Valdés

The keeper did not have a lot to do until Van Rhijn's header called him into action on 30 minutes. He then produced a string of top saves after the break, including saving Sigthorsson's penalty.

  • Adriano

    Adriano

A good performance at left-back, although he did not see an awful lot come down his flank in terms of attacking intent. He regularly pushed on to offer support to Neymar and helped his team recycle the ball from the flanks.

  • Daniel Alves

    Daniel Alves

The Brazilian pushed forward from the off, although he did not always have the kind of space to run into that he may be accustomed to. He was more adventurous in the closing stages and really stretched the Ajax defence.

  • Piqué

    3.50

    Piqué

At times looked vulnerable to the Ajax counterattack as he struggled to orchestrate the defence himself. He was lucky not to concede a penalty in the first half for a challenge on Sigthorsson.

  • Busquets

    3.50

    Busquets

Provided a very calm and strong base for Barcelona in the middle. He moved the ball around well and rarely gave away possession. He acted as an anchor in the middle which allowed the full-backs to push on.

  • Cesc Fàbregas

    Cesc Fàbregas

Passed the ball well in midfield and was eager to push up and support his team-mates in the final third. He had one wayward effort in the opening minutes but failed to provide anything more threatening.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Displayed his immense technique throughout with crisp passing, a great touch and some penetrating runs. He put some great cut-backs into the box from the byeline on either side of the goal but none of his team-mates could add a finish.

  • Javier Mascherano
    16

    3.50

    Javier Mascherano

Made a number of wayward passes during the first half that needlessly gave possession away. Defensively, though, he did well and tracked the runners through the middle. He was bailed out by Valdes after his clumsy tackle gave away a penalty.

  • Alexis Sánchez

    Alexis Sánchez

The Chilean found it difficult to get involved in the action throughout. His movement seemed extremely predictable and he could not shake off Blind. Missed a great opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the second half.

  • Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi Top of the Match

The Argentine took his Champions League goals tally up to 62 with a mesmerising hat-trick. He linked up well with Neymar and at times coasted past the Ajax defence with unbelievable ease.

  • Neymar

    Neymar

An impressive Champions League debut from the former Santos man as he had the beating of Van Rhijn all evening. He made light work of the right-back and earned an assist for Pique's goal.

Replaced Pique with 10 minutes remaining and nearly got himself a goal with a looping header.

Brought on for Fabregas in the 72nd minute and played a number of incisive passes. He provided an assist for Messi's hat-trick.

Came on from Neymar in the 72nd minute and caused Ajax problems with his pace.

  • Kenneth Vermeer

    Kenneth Vermeer

The keeper should not have been beaten by Messi's free kick as it defeated him on the side of the goal that he should have had covered. He looked shaky thereafter and was made a fool of on Messi's hat-trick strike.

  • Daley Blind

    2.50

    Daley Blind

Did well to monitor the movements of Sanchez for much of the game, but he proved vulnerable to the diagonal ball in behind him. He failed to get up and help support his team on the counterattack, though this would likely have left them short.

  • N. Boilesen

    2.50

    N. Boilesen

Played on the left side of the forward line and helped protect his full back by tracking the runs of Dani Alves. The Brazilian did not get much joy down that flank thanks to the Dane's efforts, but Boilesen came up short in the final third.

  • Niklas Moisander

Niklas Moisander Flop of the Match

The Finland international stepped out from the back regularly but did not always manage to read the play astutely enough to make it pay off. He left spaces in the defence which Barcelona exploited.

  • Ricardo van Rhijn

    Ricardo van Rhijn

The right-back had a difficult afternoon up against Neymar as the Brazilian beat him time and again. He looked especially vulnerable with little cover, but he did force a good save from Valdes with a header in the first half.

  • Stefano Denswil

    Stefano Denswil

He was unable to get close enough to Messi as the Argentine cut inside to slot home his second of the night and he was then beaten to the ball as Pique headed in the third. He picked up a yellow card late on for a poor tackle which summed up his night.

  • Christian Poulsen

    Christian Poulsen

Distributed possession to the forwards and was a link between defence and attack. Displayed a good range of passing.

    Lerin Duarte

The youngster gave away a cheap free kick just outside the area which Messi subsequently fired into the back of the net. He struggled to hold onto possession and was overrun by the Barca midfield

  • Siem de Jong

    2.50

    Siem de Jong

The midfielder continued his recovery from a collapsed lung but looked short of fitness. He found it difficult to get involved in the match and was a passenger for most of it.

  • Bojan Krkic

    3.00

    Bojan Krkic

Always looked to attack whenever he got on the ball and was Ajax's most dangerous player in the first half. He got one good shot away and supplied the cross for Van Rhijn's header, but he went missing after the break.

  • Kolbeinn Sigthórsson

    Kolbeinn Sigthórsson

The Iceland international worked extremely hard for his team and his robust play caused some awkward moments for the hosts. However, he failed to convert from the spot.
