Chelsea win Aggregate 5 - 4

Live Commentary

  • That's it from me, Al Hain-Cole. Thanks for joining me for a most enjoyable Europa League encounter, especially for those who switched on at half-time. Until next time, have a great evening.
  • That barrage of second half goals looked impossible after a lacklustre opening period, in which the Russians looked rather devoid of ideas against a Chelsea side who were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure. They found inspiration thanks to the Blues' inability to defend a loifted ball, and in the end it is a result that probably sends everyone home reasonable happy. The Russians were up against it before the match, but did not embarrass themselves thanks to a stirring comeback, while Chelsea are one step closer to a second consecutive European final.
  • And it's all over! Chelsea go through thanks to their comfortable first leg lead and two away goals, but huge credit must go to Rubin, who never knew when they were beaten in the second half. It was a little bit more nervous than it should have been for Benitez's men, but they are safely into the final four.
  • 90' + 1'
    SubstitutionFrank Lampard Branislav Ivanovic
  • 90' + 1'
    Yellow Card Oscar
  • 90' + 1'
Oscar with a half chance to seal it but his shot is straight at the keeper.
  • 90'
Another header provides a half-chance, as Dyadyun meets a long cross into the box but his effort is straight into Cech's hands.
  • 89'
Chelsea are desperately awaiting the final whistle, as they continue to hoof the ball clear at every opportunity. It just keeps on coming back though...
  • 87'
    Yellow Card Marcano
  • 87'
Rubin have looked much more like the side who defeated Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan earlier in the competition in this second half. You could have been forgiven for scratching your head about that in the opening 45.
  • 84'
Berdyev has let go of his prayer beads and is urging his side on from the touchline. Perhaps he believes in miracles...
  • 81'
Great chance! Ansaldi, who has looked lively all night from left-back, sends another inviting cross into the box which Rondon meets squarely inside the six yard box. However, his header is directed straight into the hands of a grateful Cech. Either side and it would have been very interesting...
  • 79'
Dyadyun strikes a long range shot from 20 yards out, but it hits the backboard behind the goal.
  • 79'
The final 15 minutes look set to be a lot more interesting than one might have imagined earlier on in the game. Where has this second half come from and where was it in the first period?
  • 77'
    SubstitutionYossi Benayoun Oscar
  • 75'
    Penalty Goal Bibras Natcho
Goal!!! Natcho duly steps up and dispatches the spot kick, just as he did at Stamford Bridge. That penalty was very soft, but Rubin now have the faintest glimmer of hope.
  • 74'
Penalty! Azpilicueta is penalised for a push in the back on the substitute Ryanzantsev.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionAlan Kasaev Alexander Ryazantsev
  • 71'
The ball is not sticking with the Blues, who are having to resist incessant waves of Russian attacks.
  • 69'
Chelsea are still firmly in control of this game, but have given the hosts a bit of hope with some slack defending. Rubin are playing their best football of the night and are looking unwilling to give up without a fight.
  • 67'
The second half has been as lively as the first was quiet.
  • 66'
    SubstitutionOrbaiz Vladimir Dyadun
Berdyev has thrown on another striker in the place of a midfielder. Surely they can't get another three goals to go through?
  • 64'
Chance! Marcano meets yet another cross into the box from the left, but puts his header wide of the far post. Rubin seem to have discovered the Achilles heel of this Chelsea side, and are now flinging balls into the box at every opportunity.
  • 63'
You have to question Luiz's marking there, Karadeniz is hardly the most imposing aerial presence but won the header easily.
  • 62'
    Assist Cristian Ansaldi
  • 62'
    Goal Gökdeniz Karadeniz
GOAL!!! Rubin are just refusing to lie down in this second half, and Karadeniz meets a looping cross at the far post to head the ball into the back of the net.
  • 60'
    SubstitutionRamires John Obi Mikel
With the job surely done and dusted, Ramires is replaced by Mikel with Sunday's game in mind.
  • 58'
That goal came at just the right time for Chelsea, nipping any potential Rubin fightback in the bud straight away.
  • 55'
    Assist Ramires
  • 55'
    Goal Victor Moses
GOAL!!! Chelsea are awoken from their comfortable slumber and move forward in numbers. Moses plays a clever one-two with Ramires before curling the ball expertly into the far post. Game over, surely.
  • 55'
That strike has lifted the modest crowd, and Rubin look to have a bit of fire in their belly now.
  • 51'
    Assist Orbaiz
  • 51'
    Goal Marcano
Goal!!! Rubin have the equaliser as Ivan Marcano meets a cross into the box following a corner and heads it firmly into the far corner.
  • 51'
That goal all stemmed from a strong piece of play from Rondon, who forced a corner after outmuscling Terry. The corner was pulled back to Orbaiz, who found his compatriot with a lovely cross. Marcano easily rose higher than Azpilicueta to give his side the early goal that they so desperately needed and which looked so unlikely for long periods of the first half.
  • 48'
Kasaev almost makes in-roads into the box yet again, but is stopped at the third attempt by Terry. He looks like a potential dangerman for the hosts.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionOleg Kuzmin Vitaliy Kaleshin
  • 46'
We're back underway, with Rubin in control of the ball and looking to unlock a packed Chelsea defence.
  • 5'
Rubin make a change, with Kuzmin being replaced at right back by Vitali Kaleshin.
  • A leisurely second half seems to be on the cards, which is just what Benitez would have wanted with that cup clash in mind. Petr Cech's save just before half-time could prove very important in ensuring a problem-free closing period.
  • One definite positive for the Blues is the performance of Fernando Torres, who took his goal very well. The Spaniard is looking hungry, and is obviously hoping to work his way into the first team for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.
  • It has been all too comfortable for Chelsea in this half, as Torres' early goal seemed to take the wind out of the Rubin's sails. The Russians have grown into the game, but still look up against it to overturn the three-goal deficit currently facing them.
  • And that is the last action of the first period, as the referee blows for half-time.
  • 45'
Great chance for Rubin! Lovely ball over the top by Natkho finds Gokdeniz in behind the defence, and his controlled strike is kept out by a fantastic save by Cech, who gets down to his right very sharply and preserves his side's lead.
  • 43'
Almost an opening for Chelsea, who looked to have their defence outnumbered for a moment there. However, Moses' pass sends Lampard too far wide and he cane only send a low cross into the keeper's arms.
  • 41'
Rubin need three goals just to take this game into extra time, but it doesn't look like you need to worry too much about delaying your dinner. It is hard to see them scoring once at this rate.
  • 37'
Another couple of half chances for Rubin, as a shot comes into the box but is blocked, before Rondon struggles to connect with a header. It's all looking rather pedestrian at the moment.
  • 34'
A bit of excitement as Kasaev picks the ball up near the halfway line and embarks on a jinking run past three defenders into the box, demonstrating some dazzling footwork. He pulls the ball back to Eremenko, but his shot is weak and Cech gathers it easily.
  • 33'
Good run by Moses down the left, but his pull-back from the touchline is into a crowd of defenders and is cleared.
  • 31'
A half-chance (barely) for Rubin, as Gokdeniz takes an impressive cross-field pass on his chest and half-volleys the ball into the box to Rondon. The striker tries to hook a shoot at goal but is wayward.
  • 28'
The hosts must be cursing whichever Fifa bigwig who decided that they had to play their European ties in Moscow. Rubin are undefeated in their last European 19 games at their Tsentralnyi Stadion in Kazan, but have lost three of their last four games in the Russian capital, and don't look comfortable at all today.
  • 25'
Chelsea are happy to sit deep and ask Rubin to do their worst at the moment, which has not looked all too threatening so far.
  • 21'
A promising one-two between Rondon and Gokdeniz allows the Venezuelan striker a bit of space to have a shot on goal, but he shanks his effort horribly wide from the edge of the box. He has not had much to work with as yet.
  • 20'
The small crowd and one-sided aggregate score-line are doing nothing for this match as a spectacle, and it is hard to believe that this is a European quarter final at the moment.
  • 17'
Moses has a sight of goal himself, but his shot from the edge of the box is a tame one. He was trying to curl it into the far post but got it wrong and the keeper claims it with ease.
  • 16'
Victor Moses wins a free-kick on the left wing after jinking inside and being brought down. Lampard sends a dangerous ball into the box but there is a flag up for offside.
  • 14'
Torres breaks down the wing and flings a decent cross into the box, which the diminutive Yossi Benayoun just fails to connect with properly in the air.
  • 13'
The Rubin boss Kurban Berdyev can be seen clutching his prayer beads on the touchline. His side may need all the help they can get now.
  • 12'
Chelsea are applying some pressure in the final third now, closing the Russian defenders down energetically.
  • 9'
It should be pointed out that it was an excellent finish by Torres, mind you.
  • 9'
Rubin look slightly deflated after that goal, which was very avoidable. It was a simple long ball by Lampard which somehow surprised the home defence, but the keeper had no need to come so far out of his goal, with his defenders on the retreat.
  • 7'
That's Torres' third goal of the tie... He must wish that he could play Rubin every week.
  • 5'
    Assist Frank Lampard
  • 5'
    Goal Fernando Torres
GOAL!!! Chelsea strike a potentially crucial away goal though Torres, who latches onto a ball over the top by Lampard to lob the ball over the onrushing Ryzhikov. The keeper was in no-man's land there, 25 yards out.
  • 4'
Chance! Some nice play by Rondon on the right of the bos sees him find Karadeniz Gokdeniz, who pulls it back to Eremenko. The Finnish international sees his shot blocked.
  • 3'
A slightly nervous looping back pass by Ake puts the Blues under a bit of pressure, but they manage to get the ball clear.
  • 2'
Rubin start the game in control of the ball, as Chelsea look content to sit back and hit the Russians on the break.
  • 1'
The players are on the pitch, and we're off!
  • Only 10,000 'home' fans are filling the Luzhniki, which has a capacity of almost 80,000. Rubin are being forced to play their matches in Moscow rather than their home town of Kazan, which lies over 800km further east.
  • John Terry captains the Blues this evening, on his 100th European appearance for the club.
  • The Europa League's second leading scorer Salomon Rondon returns up front for Rubin, in the place of Dyadyun, who went off with an injury in the first leg.
  • Subs: Arlauskis, Kaleshin, Sharonov, Ryazantsev, Kislyak, Gokhan Tore, Dyadyun
  • And the Rubin Kazan starting XI: Ryzhikov; Kuzmin, Ansaldi, Navas, Marcano; Orbaiz, Kasaev, Eremenko, Karadeniz, Natcho; Rondón.
  • Subs: Turnbull, Ivanovic, Oscar, Mikel, Hazard, Marin, Mata
  • Here's the Chelsea team in full: Cech; Azpilicueta, Luiz, Terry, Ferreira; Ake, Lampard; Ramires, Benayoun, Moses; Torres
  • The Spanish tactician has made a number of changes from Sunday's Premier League win over Sunderland, with the most eye-catching being young Nathan Ake's inclusion in front of Paulo Ferreira on the left flank. The 18-year-old Dutchman is making his first ever start for the club, while Ferreira's appearance at left-back is due to the injuries to Ashley Cole and Ryan Bertrand.
  • Rafa Benitez's men will be grateful for their two-goal cushion as they make the difficult trip to Russia, but may be looking nervously at that away goal should things not go their way.
  • I'm Al Hain-Cole, and I'll be keeping you up to date as the Blues look to protect their 3-1 first leg lead in order to book themselves a place in the semi-final.
  • Hello and welcome to's coverage of Chelsea's Europa league clash with Rubin Kazan in Moscow.
