The 22-year-old midfielder <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/usmnt-midfielder-johnny-cardoso-completes-move-real-betis/blt7ecfa5419c8e7438" target="_self">only made his way to Europe in December 2023</a> after catching the eye in Brazil with Internacional. He has taken in just 15 appearances for Betis, but is already said to be <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/johnny-cardoso-barcelona-transfer-rumors-real-betis-la-liga-usmnt-copa-america/blted4ec1149eb3da74" target="_blank">registering on the recruitment radars of leading sides in Spain, Germany, England</a> and Italy.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Cardoso has responded to that speculation by telling <a href="https://www.ondacero.es/emisoras/andalucia/sevilla/deportes/johnny-cardoso-onda-cero-cabeza-objetivos-estan-betis_20240508663b66fb8e66020001d055ef.html " target="_blank">Onda Cero</a>: “I arrived here a short time ago. I am very happy. My head and my goals are here at Betis. I try to continue working hard and develop well at the club.”Quizzed on whether he <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/usmnt-johnny-cardoso-bidding-war-barcelona-atletico-madrid/bltbe725793b77f9219" target="_blank">expects to be on the move over the summer</a>, Cardoso added: “No. My head is in Betis and I leave the conversations for my agent.”

WHAT CARDOSO SAID

New Jersey native Cardoso has settled quickly in Spain, allowing his stock to soar, and said of embracing a new challenge in his blossoming career: “I did not expect such a quick adaptation. I am very happy with everything. All my team-mates, technical staff, the club have helped me a lot with the adaptation. We have a lot to develop.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Cardoso has formed part of two triumphant CONCACAF Nations League squads for the United States and, with 11 senior caps to his name, will be hoping to figure in Gregg Berhalter’s plans for this summer’s Copa America.
