Arsene Wenger says Jack Wilshere will remain at Arsenal next season but faces a fight to earn his place back in the team.

The England midfielder, linked with moves to AC Milan and most recently Sampdoria, spent the 2016-17 Premier League season on loan at Bournemouth.

Wilshere made 27 league appearances under Eddie Howe last term before suffering a leg break in the Cherries' 4-0 defeat at Tottenham in April.

Concerns surrounding the 25-year-old's fitness and interest from abroad led to questions about his future, with just a year left to run on his current contract. 

And though Wenger has moved to rule out a move for Wilshere, the Gunners boss has warned he faces a battle to return to first-team contention.

Bakayoko's cryptic series of tweets

“I think Jack will be with Arsenal next season, yes,” Wenger is quoted by The Mirror. “I will give you a very focused answer on that, that he has to work hard to come back and fight for a place in the team.

“But once he is ready, when he comes back, he will not be far from practising with the team.”
