VIDEO: The evolution of training and conditioning with Mario Gotze

Football has evolved.

And so too, of course, has its methods - on both matchdays and the training ground.

Higher intensity games mean that players are now covering up to 35% more ground in matches than their counterparts in the 1960s, who on average were carrying a lot more weight, too.

The modern footballer has a more ectomorph body shape than their predecessors, who would rarely train more than 2-3 hours per day and kept nothing like the nutritional standards set by contemporary players.

Germany international and World Cup-winner Mario Gotze found out just how difficult it would be for a player from 50 years ago to operate in modern football when he was give some extra weight to carry through drills.

“It’s just not possible,” he said of making it through 90 minutes today in that shape.
