Pirlo: It's time for De Rossi to leave Roma but it's too early for MLS move

Andrea Pirlo believes the time is right for Daniele De Rossi to leave Roma, insisting he can still succeed in another European league.

Could Real really sign Griezmann?

De Rossi, 33, has been a Roma player since 2000, but has never lifted the Serie A title with them.

The Italy midfielder has been linked with several top clubs throughout his time in the Stadio Olimpico, but has remained a one-club man like captain and icon Francesco Totti.

While the latter may be nearing the end of his career, reports have seen De Rossi surprisingly linked to a move to Chelsea this summer.

The 33-year-old maintains he wants to keep playing and admitted he regrets not leaving the capital club, and Pirlo believes it is a choice he should still consider.

"I think it's early to come to America," Pirlo told SportItalia. "He can still play at a high level. I would advise him to leave. He's young, can still make it in a league in Europe.

"Is this Totti's last year? It will depend a lot on him if his enthusiasm is right."

The latest transfer rumours

At 37, Pirlo continues to ply his trade in the United States with New York City FC, and admits his career will come to an end soon.

"Sooner or later I'll think about retiring myself, you cannot play forever," he added. "When you're no longer a part of the squad you think of doing something else. Now I'm concentrating and I'm trying to finish well. Maybe I'll go back to Italy and study to become a coach because you never know."
