Lloris: Top four finish better than a trophy

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has said that a top four finish for Spurs means more to the team than winning a trophy.

Spurs secured qualifiaction to the Champions League for a third successive season after beating Newcastle 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The north London side are going through their most succesful period in over two decades under Mauricio Pochettino, finishing second and third in the previous two seasons.

Pochettino is yet to win a trophy at Spurs and there are worries that star players such as Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen will become disillusioned with life at the club if they don't lift some silverware soon.

One player who doesn't feel that sentiment is Hugo Lloris, who feels that the achievement of finishing in the top four whilst not having a home stadium is greater than winning a trophy.

"To be in the Champions League three times in a row means a lot; to be above Chelsea and Arsenal, I think we deserve credit," Lloris told the BBC.

"Not a lot of people believed in Tottenham at the beginning of the season for the top four places and I think today means more than a trophy because we showed the club is strong even if we had some difficult moments."

Even though the French keeper is happy with a top four finish he still aims to win something with the club.

"We need to enjoy it because we've played 37 games away from home - that's the feeling to be honest.

"You can say whatever you want, but Tottenham isn't at its home ground and I think the most exciting thing is that next season we will play Champions League in our new stadium.

"For the fans, the club, the players, the coaching and medical staff it's a big, big achievement but we need to keep working and to stay ambitious because the next step is to win something."
