Liverpool and Chelsea target Leon Bailey signs new Bayer Leverkusen deal

Bayer Leverkusen have announced that they have tied attacker Leon Bailey down to a fresh deal that runs until 2023.

The forward has been linked to several clubs over the summer, with Manchester United's interest first to emerge, but recent reports have associated him with Liverpool and Chelsea.

Last month, the player's agent said there had been some glances from Serie A side Roma but admitted no contact was made

Bailey said in June that there had been "concrete" interest in him from across Europe's top leagues, but Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller insisted no offers had been made, even though he suggested the German side would be willing to sell for the right price,

Instead, the 21-year-old has ended speculation over his future by tying himself to the Bundesliga side for another five years.

A statement from the club reads: "Bayer 04 and Leon Bailey have agreed a contract extension: The new deal for the 21-year-old runs to 30 June 2023."

Bailey has made 44 appearances for Leverkusen since he joined from Genk in January 2017 and has scored 12 times for the Germans.

The winger has made one appearance for Jamaica Under 23s, scoring one goal, but his international career has not been decided.

Bailey had flirted with the possibility of playing for England before eligibility rules ended his chances of making the team, but his father has suggested he could wait until he has German citizenship and can feature for them.

Leverkusen have signed competition for Bailey ahead of the new season, having lured 18-year-old Brazilian winger Paulinho from Vasco da Gama, who made his debut in the DFB-Pokal first round win over Pforzheim.
