LA Galaxy sign Dutch defender Pele van Anholt

The LA Galaxy have signed Dutch defender Pele van Anholt, the MLS side announced Wednesday.

The 26-year-old fullback played for Willem II of the Eredivisie last season, starting 22 games in league for the side, which finished 13th.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though the defender was out of contract with Willem II.

“Pele is a talented and versatile player who will immediately add quality and experience to our defense,” LA Galaxy general manager Pete Vagenas said in a press release. “Our staff did an excellent job at identifying this player and executing the signing to improve our roster and we look forward to him joining our squad.”

Van Anholt has spent most of his career in the Eredivisie, having featured for Heerenveen for five seasons before his move to Willem II last year on a free transfer.

“We are excited to welcome Pele to Los Angeles,” LA Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo said. “He has earned a lot of experience in Netherlands’ top division and proven to be a productive player. We are confident that will suit him well in our league.”

The Galaxy, who sit in eighth place in the Western Conference and are two points from a playoff spot, announced their new signing will be available for the team’s friendly against Manchester United on July 15.
