Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole has retired from international duty after being left out of Roy Hodgson's England squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Southampton's highly-rated 18-year-old Luke Shaw will be named as one of two left-backs by Hodgson, alongside Leighton Baines.

Goal has also learned that Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick and Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker will miss out when Hodgson's full list is released on Monday afternoon.

Cole, who won 107 caps for his country, confirmed on Twitter that he will not be part of the travelling party to Brazil this summer and announced his immediate retirement from the international scene.

"I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now," he wrote.

"We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything.

"Baines and Shaw are great players, proved this season, and are the future of this country, it was a pleasure to get 107 caps.

"Like me or not, trust me it's hurt me to stop playing for my country proud and honoured."

Cole has made 14 Premier League starts for Jose Mourinho's Chelsea this season, having lost his place to Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta, traditionally a right-back.

The former Arsenal man was in fine form in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid at the end of April, following weeks on the sidelines, but he will not represent the Three Lions in Brazil this summer.

Reports on Sunday evening suggest that Shaw and Baines will be joined by Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling, while Arsenal pair Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere, both recovering from injury, will also be named.

Phil Jones gave Hodgson a scare when he was withdrawn from Manchester United's 3-1 win over Hull in midweek, but he is reportedly to be included alongside team-mate Danny Welbeck, while Everton's Ross Barkley will also claim a place.
