The Amsterdam giants are in the market for a new defender due to the expected departure of Jan Vertonghen, and Moisander, 26, appears to be sitting in pole position to replace the Belgium international.

"Ajax have informed us about their interest. That's all there is to say for now. We are not thinking about transfers at this crucial stage of the season. We'll look at it at the end of the campaign," Stewart said to Voetbal International.

Moisander has a contract with AZ until the summer of 2014, and is unlikely to be allowed to leave on the cheap.

The centre-back would not be the first player to leave the Alkmaar side for Ajax if the move materialises. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, Mounir El Hamdaoui and Demy de Zeeuw all made the switch to the Amsterdam ArenA in recent years.
