Tottenham's attempted move for Porto's Joao Moutinho has collapsed late on transfer deadline day.

Spurs had seen a club record £22 million bid accepted by Porto for the 25-year-old on Friday but the north London outfit were unable to complete a deal with his representatives before the transfer deadline closed at 11pm.

Moutinho had been touted as the ideal replacement for Luka Modric in Tottenham's midfield after the Croatian joined Real Madrid for £33.2m earlier this week.

Rafael van der Vaart followed the former Dinamo Zagreb man out of White Hart Lane on Friday, joining Hamburg for £10.3m, heightening Spurs' need for a central midfielder.

Spurs bolstered their options in the middle with the signing of Mousa Dembele on Wednesday, but Moutinho will remain with the Portuguese champions despite a late push from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy on the final day of the transfer window.
