Selangor forward Paulo Rangel has been voted as the Goal's Best Malaysia Super League player, beating out five other candidates.
Names such as Jorge Diaz, Luciano Figueroa, Shahrom Kalam, Farizal Marlias and Dilshod Sharofetdinov were all shortlisted as the six of the most impressive players from the recently concluded season. A poll was then launched to select the best from the list, with 50% of the decision also coming from eight Goal expert panelists.
After one week of voting, Paulo Rangel collectively emerged as the winner of this accolade; with four out of eight expert panelists voting from him, adding onto the massive 26% (472 votes) that he received from readers.
The Brazilian forward finished second in the poll, with 43% (774 votes) of the votes going to Jorge Diaz. However, Paulo Rangel snatched the award as four goal expert panelists believed that his consistency throughout the season merited this award.
The 28-year-old striker spoke of his delight at the award win but is now focused on the upcoming Malaysia Cup campaign with the Red Giants.
"I am very proud because I did a good job. But the MSL is finished already and I want to focus on (the) Malaysia Cup," he told Goal Malaysia.
"Thank you for everything, I keep it professional, I give everything what I can do. I’d die for my team and I hope I can continue to make people happy with my goals"
Rangel was extremely instrumental in Selangor's strong run in the Malaysia Super League, firing 16 goals throughout the season, while also carving out numerous other opportunities. His influence was so paramount that Selangor's title charge faltered towards the end of the season, when Rangel was suspended for two games.
Even though the Red Giants were unable to lift the Super League title, Rangel and company are already preparing for the tough challenge that awaits them in the upcoming Malaysia Cup. Selangor have been drawn with PDRM, Sime Darby and T-Team in Group D, with the first match slated for kick off on the 13th August.
