De Gea put on an impressive showing against Real in the Champions League and that could make him a Red Devil for a long time to come according to Mustapha "El Loco" Kamaruddin
Barcelona had scouts at Santiago Bernabeu during Wednesday‘s Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Manchester United which ended at 1-1.
According to reports, the objective for this scouting mission was to "observe closely" the United goalkeeper David De Gea in action.
The Catalans are interested to sign De Gea as a replacement for Victor Valdes, 31, who recently voiced his intention of leaving Nou Camp next season.
Barca, specifically, are looking for a young and highly-talented goalkeeper and De Gea surely fits the bill.
The other established goalkeeper in the Barca squad is 37-year-old veteran Pinto, who has just renewed his contract.
However, besides being erratic, Pinto's age is catching up with him although he joked that he would love to play until he turns 50!
De Gea has been criticised, some times unfairly, by England fans, pundits and the press for his fumbles which caused United points in the English Premier League.
In fact, there have already speculations that his career with the Red Devils may conclude soon as United are hunting for a new no.1.
But now, Barca may well be disappointed after all their efforts in attempting to bring De Gea to Nou Camp because United are unlikely to sell him - especially not after his memorable show on Wednesday.
United could have lost at least 3-1 or worse if not for the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper.
He may not have beaten Real while serving Atletico, but he gave United a great chance to defeat Los Blancos for a place in the last eight of the elite European competition.
It started in the sixth minute when Fabio Coentrao’s shot slipped through the legs of several players and looked bound to slip inside the far post.
But the 1.9-metre tall custodian managed to get his fingertips on the ball to deflect it just enough so that it hit the inside of the post and caromed out.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal at the 30-minute mark was sublime and De Gea was not at fault - there was nothing he could do about it.
In the 60th minute De Gea returned to the forefront and again to stop Coentrao’s shot.
The Portuguese was near the far post and tried to slip a shot pass De Gea but he some how 'kick-saved' the ball to safety.
It was an incredible show of reflexes which kept out a rampaging Real off the scoreboard.
It comes as no surprise that United boss Alex Ferguson, who has been defending De Gea against the critics, hailed his goalkeeper’s performance.
Things would not have been that rosy for United in the return leg if it was not for the 22-year-old.
The focus of the match on Wednesday was always on Ronaldo and United's Robin van Persie but De Gea rudely stole the show to the frustration of Real's supporters.
He was a showstopper, no doubt about it.
De Gea is a great shot stopper, it is always hard to beat him. His problem is that, at times, he finds it difficult to deal with crosses and aerial balls.
This was always been the case for this Madrid-born Spainish goalkeeper even when he was at Atletico.
But he can always improve with hard work in training.
Remember, he is still young.
And De Gea says he is happy at United.
"I am very happy in Manchester. Every day I am happier," he added.
Barca, with that, would be better to search elsewhere for a reliable young goalkeeper.
What about Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois who is on loan to Atletico?
But then again, the Blues are not going to sell this talented goalkeeper that easily to a team like Barca.
