Despite being stretchered off on Wednesday, Mustapha ‘El Loco’ Kamaruddin thinks it's possible for Leo Messi to make a timely return and force his way into the record books
Will he or will he not?
This is the story of Barcelona's little wizard Lionel Messi, who is on the verge of creating another milestone by breaking Germany legend Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in one calendar year.
Messi has already scored 84 goals in 2012 and could have easily broken this record, which was achieved by Muller or 'Der Bomber' way back in 1972.
However, there is now this little drama to the story as Messi got injured five minutes before the end in Barca's 0-0 draw with Benfica in their final Group G Champions League match at Nou Camp on Wednesday.
He was coming as a substitute in this 'meaningless' match as Barca had already qualified to the last 16.
There was surely this scare to Barca and millions of Messi's fans around the world as initially the injury looked bad as he was stretchered out of the pitch after a collision with Benfica goalkeeper Artur.
Messi also thought it would be a long time before he could touch the ball again, initially.
However, he was relieved after being told by Barca doctors that the injury was not bad as it looked.
Apparently, he just suffered bruised bone in his left knee.
This piece of news is naturally welcomed by Barca and Messi's fans alike as his adventure is set to continue soon.
Messi does not know when he will be able to return on the pitch, though. But most likely, he will miss the tricky away match against formidable Real Betis on Monday (4am, Malaysian time).
Leaders and the still unbeaten Barca need Messi for this match as the Catalan giants only won once out of 10 matches played at Estadio Benito Villamarin.
However, manager Tito Vilanova is not expected to take the risk by fielding Messi if he is not fully fit.
If this is the case, then Messi will have only two matches left in 2012 to beat Muller's record - both in Primera Liga.
The first is a home match against high-flying Atletico Madrid on Dec 16.
Even if he does not play or score in this match, Messi will have that last chance in the away match against Real Valladolid on Dec 22 as he should be fully fit by then.
And he is more than capable of getting the goals at Estadio Nuevo José Zorrilla and celebrate Christmas in style with his family, especially his junior Thiago.
Primera Liga takes a break after that match and will resume on Jan 6, 2013.
Messi actually is not obsessed with this breaking Muller's record as what is more important to him is for Barca to win every match they play.
"This record breaking is not a big deal," he said
But to his fans, they would love to see 'La Pulga' achieve it. They feel he deserves it after his goal-scoring exploits in 2012.
If everything goes fine, Messi can do it and the record may well stay there for a long, long time.
It is just fated if he won't achieve it. However, there will be other times, perhaps, as remember he is only 25 although as if he has been playing for ages.
He made his debut with Barca at the age of 16 plus, remember?
Pray hard King Leo's fans.
